Isn't it possible to load the cobalt software on a bare 1U rack.

I can get a faster better hardware than cobalt but I preffer their control panel GUI they have and that's perfect for my clients.

It is possible but Sun doesn't allow their software to be put on other company's hardware. One rep had stated they prosecuted several isp's for putting RAQ4 software on RAQ3 hardware.

Besides it being wrong (tisk), I believe there are some initial setup things that must be done via the outside, but not entirely sure on that one. I suppose you could get around that *if* it wasn't wrong (tisk).

Interesting... Never thought about that. I am surprised it can be done. I also read on that. Someone used the Raq 4 software/CD to update his Raq3 and worked fine.

I also did the math and buying the 1200 raq, and the $150.00 per month co-location fee is not cost effective.

For 150 a month I can lease a Cobalt 4. A year later I might buy one or custom design one with Plesk, Cpanel, or other software to handle stuff...

That way for 1200 I can buy me a new PC for web development and such.

Anyone out there know anyone for $150/month Cobalt Raq lease? I am looking into hosting 10-20 sites for now and growing.

http://www.serverrack.net/ >> $79+ RAQ leasing
http://www.rackshack.com/ >> $99+ RAQ leasing
http://www.4webspace.com/ >> $99+ RAQ leasing

there are plenty more that offer affordable RAQ leasing. search around the forums and you'll find them mentioned.

Thank you for the info. That was very helpful and very ... hmmm I might take a bite at that. I also checked out the Dell Servers .. heeh maybe that I will get later. Although I hear bad things about Cobalt, that's the best I can afford now with minimal maintenance.

I get 6 people to host @ 15 bucks and that should pay the bill...

Yes it is possible to use RAQ4 software on a RAQ3 system. Although it is not possible to use the software on a 'home-made' box.

Both is illegal though...

I get 6 people to host @ 15 bucks and that should pay the bill... I have had extremely good luck with Cobalt servers over the last 18 months. I first had a RaQ3 with only 64mb of memory and the only time I locked it due to memory was trying to read a huge log file... it just got away from me. I should have cat |less it so it would not have read it all or just not tried to read it :)

I think I'm seeing that you feel you'd be limited to 15 or so sites on the raq?

Not so. I've currently got 22 on mine, two of those sites are quite busy, the rest are not so busy.. but.. I'm sure you could likely host up to 100 or so that were fairly active and not have a problem.

My current box is at Rackshack, has 512mb of memory, never seems to be a problem with it and load factors are extremely low.

Management of the RaQ's are very easy, particularly if you are not steeped in "standard" linux management. The Raq's do things a bit differently in some areas so this throws the guy who has worked a lot with standard installations.

The best thing about RaQ's in my opinion is that there are a bunch of us just learning on them, most of us are willing to share what we learn in an easy to understand manner.. That and the updates for them are provided in an extremely easy .pkg to install.. no brainer is close to the description for the .pkg files..

Command line stuff is more braincycle intensive but help is available.

Reccomend Rackshack for pricing, performance and the very helpful group that haunts the message board system.. Many of "us" spend far too much time helping and not nearly enough timeworking on our sites!!

Helping is a great way to learn though!

Shortfork,

Thanks for the details. I read stuff about RShack.

I found these plans that fit my needs:

At rackshack.net it's 99$ but a hefty setup fee. I also found
this deal at ServerRack.net:

Plan Description / System Mhz / RAM / HD / IPs / GB /Mo Monthly
RaQ / 4 Basic RaQ 4 / 450 / 128 / 20.4 / 2 / 65 / $95.00

Serverrack.net on the other side make it very hard to find out how much they charge for setup-fee.

But that does make sense. If I was to pay $100/month on credit card to pay for the cobalt might as well 'lease/rent' it for that much and later get a better one when I get more clients.

Thanks again,
