I am about to sign up with VRTServers, but which OS should I choose? They have:

CentOS 3.1
Red Hat 9.0
Fedora Core 1
Fedora Core 2
FReeBsd
FreeBsd
Debian
Truxtis Cpanel
Windows 2003 Server

I am newbie and would like to use the most user friendly one. I assume I would want Linux as I will host php scripts and big forum. But which is Linux here???

Also, does having a dedicated server mean I could host unlimited domains?

I am a total newbie to this whole linux thing but the OSes that I am 100% sure that are Linux in that list are CentOS, RH, Fedora, and Debian. Simple google search proved those.

If you seriously just asked if windows 2003 is linux you should reconsider hosting..Same if you are asking if these are different:
FReeBsd
FreeBsd

I would say Red Hat 9.0 or the Fedoras.

In a web hosting environment, for newbies, you really need a control panel

CentOS by far. It is a clone of Red Hat Enterprise Linux.

RH9 has reached end of life (RH is no longer making updates) so you have to turm to open source for uptated RPM's and patches.

Fedora Core is more for desktops (but can work for servers) and upgrades often so you will have to upgrade the distro often. Fedora Core 2 has many issues with cPanel.

I have no experience with the other Linuxes. Windows servers tend to not be as stable requiring a reboot more ofteh and I prety much know I caugt a virus from one that my former web provider.

Whatever you get make sure you get a control panel (cPanel, Plesk, InterWorx) to make your life a lot easier since you are a self confessed newbie.

I am running RedHat 9 on my current server with InterWorx as a control panel. I will be upgrading to a CentOS machine as soon as InterWorx supports it (it's in Beta now).

Good Luck!

InterWorx supports unlimited domains but some of the others have higher liscence fees for more domains.
