Cool thanks....so PHP based boards like YaBB are better than cgi-based because they are less resource instenive right?

Is VBulletin cgi-based or PHP or perl or whatever?

Some are real resource intensive like UBB, or YaBB is (I don't know if the PHP version is) however Ikonboard is real good on handling resources. I think you really just need to stay away from the Flat File boards as they can make a server crawl with a large community.

Does a "flat file" board mean the same thing as cgi-based?

So UBB is flat filed and YaBB isn`t?

A flat file BB is one that uses text file instead of database to store the data.

CGI-based, I think you mean written in Perl. UBB,YaBB, and iKonboard are written in Perl. From experience, iKonboard(version 3) is less resource intensive. UBB and YaBB use flat-files, ikonboard uses a database(you have quite a few to choose from). YaBB SE is a rewrite of YaBB in PHP using mySQL. I havn't used it yet, so I don't know how good it is. vBulletin is VERY good, feature loaded, PHP, and mySQL. However, it costs money.
