nvphone 01-13-2002, 08:28 PM Will not stand behind their money back if not happy within 30 days.
Will not reply to my cancel emails for over a week.
Plain and simple..................
avara 01-13-2002, 09:02 PM I've heard quite a few horror stories about Addr in the past, so this doesn't really surprise me much.
All that said, I would give them another couple of days, and also make sure that your email account is working properly (you never know, maybe they aren't receiving your messages?)
If they provide a telephone number, try calling that as well.
gennyblake 01-13-2002, 10:35 PM I've been trying to cancel 5 accounts with them since Dec 20th. Calling doesn't help - you can't get through. The automated voice comes on and says that they are all busy - and then hangs up on you. I just sent in a message for a new help "ticket" from them. If I don't hear something in another day or so I'm reporting them to my credit card company.
You get what you pay for I guess. They have a ton of bells and whistles for dirt cheap - but you get dirt cheap service from them too.
StarGate 01-31-2002, 08:41 AM Been there, done that... my advise: Stay away from them. BTW: LiquidWeb is a similar story to ADDR... FYI
Regards
nvphone 01-31-2002, 09:50 AM update:
They emailed me wanting to know my address to send refund.
When I informed them that as Jack Webb use to say,"I carry a badge," got back to me ASAP.
My bank also told me to watch my account. Any charges made to my account will be removed. Been with same bank for over 20 years, guess that helps.
The few dollars is not my point or needed. If you say something to get people to buy, stand behind it or remove it.
markblair 01-31-2002, 09:58 AM Two words... Charge Back. Call your credit card company and dispute the charge. They will refund you and bill Addr for the exact amount. Hopefully you used a credit card instead of a debit card. Most banks don't work the same way with debit.
James Cross 01-31-2002, 11:58 AM ADDR are in the process of collapsing. They have already moved offices in CA to a much smaller unit, and are no longer operating fulltime in their Denver office. I would doubt you will be able to contact any of the company representatives directly. A charge back would definitely be the wisest cause of action.
Any other buyers BEWARE!
ebizalive 01-31-2002, 01:04 PM I had a web site hosted with them a few years ago I only needed to ask their support twice during that year. So as for the hosting I were a happy customers. Support, however, did take to long - days, not hours.

I don't think the main issue is with their performance its the fact that the company has a major financial problem on its hands. No matter how good or bad they were in the past I'd seriously advice people to keep clear for the next few months as a precaution.
ochiba 02-01-2002, 09:50 PM but my current account is still up and running fine. Like the other poster, I've only had to call ADDR.COM a couple times out of the year that I've been hosting with them, with no problems.
Are they about to get bought out?

but addr.com used to spend tons of money on advertisment. Where ever i go i see there ad. on the web site. Almost all hosting directories have there advertisments. ;)
I wonder why they are collapsing. Is this because they used all there money in advertising and brand building and now they don't have any more money to handle support staff and other stuff. :(
ebizalive 02-02-2002, 05:32 AM So many business with intelligent people skilled in some specific area has failed because they didn't manage their economy. But I don't know.
John
godlink 02-02-2002, 06:01 AM They have a attractive and professional layout unlike some other biz around that look like their site was made by a 12yr old.
Yeah they did spend all they cash on adveristing i bet.
nvphone 02-02-2002, 12:12 PM Still no refund and for what I have seen here, not much hope.
If I get one, to be fair I will update my post.
Apocalypse 02-02-2002, 08:32 PM ADDR is the worst thing it could happen, guess what? i tried to cancel my account like a year and a half ago, luckly my Creditcard expired a month after this and i just got my new card with my new expiration date, they are still invoicing me month by month more and more money, and guess what? my account is still active.
I advice you to STAY AWAY from addr.com hosting. they suck.
Apoc.

The key words here are "used to" spend money. They cut back on pretty much all ad spending around 5/6 months ago. You may still see their ad running in overture.com, but that was a 12 month order prepaid.
aplus 02-04-2002, 08:32 PM The reason for addr.com's economical problems is simple: cheap.
Offering things like CGI, PHP, MySQL, etc, for such a low price is not profitable.
Why? An example based on experience. CGI increases server usage, forcing a web host to buy more servers if the web host wants to provide fast hosting.
Same thing with PHP and MySQL... MySQL consumes plenty of RAM. Again, forcing to buy more servers.
Then, the worst: staff. CGI/MySQL/etc causes most of tech related issues. Anything from "my cgi causes 500 internal server errors" to "how do I use mysqlhotcopy to backup my database tables".
This of course, forces an increase in staff, if the web host wants queries to be replied fast.
The summary of all this: not possible. So much for as low as $7.95/month will force the web host to cut costs somewhere. From what my customers tell me, their servers used to be loaded up to load average of 20 with thousands of customers on cheap servers.
That's why there's so many horror stories of them.
As I always say, you get what you pay for. If guys see other hosts offering so much for so little, you'll get another ADDR...
Peter :)
nvphone 02-22-2002, 10:18 AM As I stated I would:
Got my refund check this week.
James Cross 02-22-2002, 10:23 AM I'm glad you managed to get the problems all sorted eventually. Did you receive any explanation over the delay in payment?
Its truly a shame that a host could treat its clients like this. I don't refer to them as customers, I refer to them as clients because you shuld have a better relationship with a client then a customer.
Call the BBB on them. Call the IRS and get them looking at their finances.
You see this all the time - people who are extremely skilled in their profession, but are horrible in business and finances. I've seen it in every indusrty I've worked in. A lto fo times people get over their head. Everybody is shooting to go to the top right away, instead of working hard and slowly to hopefully take a share of the market.
Call the BBB of them.
Devorius 02-22-2002, 04:39 PM $7.95 is rather doable as long as the company isn't spending a lot of money on frivilous things such as excessive advertising or office space (face it, you don't need an expensive office to run a business, and in fact it can often be run more efficiently from home). Bandwidth costs only about $1 per GB, and is dropping. CGI doesn't overload servers as long as it's on good, properly configured equipment.
When low-price hosts like this go down, it's most likely because of bad managment and frivilous spending, not the low prices.

Don't forget the costs of providing good quality customer support, employees, hardware/maintenance, advertising and even credit card fraud. Furthermore, while you may be able to get lower quality bandwidth for $1 or even less per gigabyte, if you're in a good quality data center like NAC.net you're likely to be paying much more than that.
Devorius 02-22-2002, 04:57 PM Customer service, hardware and maintenance, and credit card fraud all fall under how well you manage your business. You needn't have have 50 tech support people if you only get 20 calls a day. Buying new hardware and performing maintenance are both periodic things. All you have to do is set aside a small percentage of your monthly/quarterly/annual revenue and you'll be set for when either is required. As for the networks - you can get good quality bandwidth for $1/GB. You just have to find the right provider.

I agree with you completely there. The reason why I mentioned them seperately was because I thought some people reading your post might not realize the number of different costs which come into managing a web host, and might think the only real cost would be bandwidth (at least I had that impression). And no matter how well you manage them, they are still HUGE costs when put together. Basically if you manage them poorly you'll go out of business, but even if you manage them well they will still cost A LOT when put together.
Devorius 02-22-2002, 05:12 PM Very true. You need a good amount of cash to start out with so you can build a good starting base. I wouldn't recommend taking investments, though. It'll end up hurting you later. As for credit card fraud, just make sure you have a good solid license agreement with all your customers - and remember, you DO have the right to hold and sell off the content, pending payment, of someone who attempts to defraud you.

Unfortunately, not everyone feels that NAC.net is a good quality data center. I know that my experiences with them have been brief and any problems they've had have only really occurred since the beginning of the year but since that time, they have gone down several times leaving many hosts trying to answer support calls from angry clients. Of course the problem has been with NAC almost each time but that doesn't look good for the individual hosts. I know because I have a site on Site5 and in the past when I haven't been able to hit my site, I also can't access NAC.net or several other hosts that have hardware there.
This is just my opinion regarding NAC.
astrochimp 02-24-2002, 01:26 AM PLEASE STAY THE HELL AWAY FROM ADDR.COM!! AND PASS IT ON!!
