Hi

I am confused about the SQL Server licensing/pricing and was hoping that someone could fill in some details for me.

We currently operate all our servers colocated in a datacentre running Windows and Linux operating systems. The only servers we have with another provider are our MS SQL server machines. The reason for this is that we offer SQL Server hosting and because of this I understand that we need a SQL Server processor license for each machine.

When I look at the pricing around the web a processor license costs around £3000 - £3500. Our current provider charges around £80 per month for a SQL server processor license on dedicated servers I have with them.

I desperatley want to bring all our servers into the datacentre facilty because I dont want to pay for a dedicated server we are capable of managing ourselves. Unfortunately I cannot see how it is possible to justify the £3500 for the SQL server license.

How do people get over this and how does my current provider offer the license so cheaply?

If you are in US, you need be a certified MS Partner and lease license from MS directly $169/month per server. Processor license is not for hosting. If you can't be a certified MS partner(around $2000 per year membership fee extra), you need to find someone could lease but usually they charge around $300 or more.

hope you have correct license for the windows server also if you are a hosting company...

MS has different license for hosting, data center servers...
