Hello Guys,

Basically I run a webhosting company. And as you all know, we get all sort of clients either excellent or either as***les.

Well, same happened with me. Yesterday, I got a signup. It was for www.lansingstudios.com

That guy got his account info as soon as he paid. So he setup his account and used the account to send UCE/Spam.

Even I am using POP AUTH. Well, this is the second time it happened with me.

Last time I ended up paying US$200 to TB, which the client who spammed never paid and I think the same is going to happen again (though I have deleted his account immediately I got the first complaint and cleared the mail queue).

Well, whats the solution. The only option left with me is to get out of business. Because basicallly I am not running this company as a profession instead just for my experience and ease for new web designers out there.

Though, I have enough budget that I can pay the charges (that I hope won't be forced on me, but who knows). Anyways, can you please tell me how can I stop the spam that some bas***ds are sending from my server.

I am using a RaQ3 with SendMail.

Require any site you host to use there own ISP's SMTP server to send mail. And disable SendMail for any new sites. The POP server will still let them recive email just not send. That way when a person sends spam it has there local ISP's SMTP Mail Server in the records. Just a thought, I have had a few Hosting Company's require this to discourage and prevent spammers.

I don't think that's a good idea to be honest, as it may discourage legitimate customers. Certainly don't disable Sendmail, as it is used in many CGI scripts. Personally, I'm always looking for an SMTP server in my hosting packages. I'd say that most people aren't too fussy about it though, so disabling SMTP mightn't be so bad.

At first, I was also deciding to close down SMTP Server, but then I thought exactly what Lawrence told.

So, any other idea you guys have?

It would be nice if there was a way to throttle the allowed direct smtp connections per IP per hour. if the maillog was monitored, and only allowed say, 50, smtp dirrect connections from any 1 ip. any customers who need more then that would just have there "smtp quota" turned up once you've determined there not a spammer. As far as people using scripts, throttle this on a script-owner basias.

then again. a system like this would probably be a real headache. Anyone know if this has been tried? it does seam a little extream
