Hey guys.
Just wrote this email quite verbosely, but contained a URL and wouldn't let me post. Went back to take the URL out, and the form data wasn't there anymore. So this will be more brief.
Been with VizHost.com for about 2 years (back when it was called North Wind Web Host). Back then, things were great. Great support, great uptime, fast responses and friendly service.
After the company became (renamed) VizHost.com, the company has slid downhill.
Basically, while transfering the server from one machine to another, they 'lost' a 900MB database of mine. They just said that they couldn't find it, and it was my problem. Hard lesson learned: back up your database more regularly. But seriously: This wasn't a hard drive crash... the data just disappeared. Still, not much I could do.
Three weeks later (which was about 3 days ago), all the server mysteriously went down with no word. No email to customers explaining the situation, nothing. I sent out over 10 emails asking what was going on: No response.
Later, the following was posted on the VizHost.com website:
Dear VizHost client, yesterday (5th September) the main hard drive on the SkyLine server failed and we need to enter all billing information onto the new server. We are trying to fix this issue asap - but we need help from you.
Doesn't sound to serious does it.... A little billing problem right? Nope -- they lost every byte of data and didn't even TRY to recover it (I've had mangled HD's before, and can always get some of the data back). Anyways, second lesson learned: Never trust your webhost to do anykind of data recovery or backup.
Regardless, the core of the problem was the fact that they all but ignored any emails I sent them. They never informed customers of things going wrong, and did little to compensate when they did.
I was, the first time, offered 6 months free hosting -- But now that there are new managers, they have no record of this deal and said I had to produce proof of this offer. My question is simple: If I, as they say, are "totally responsible for [my] own data", then why, am I.... also responsible for their billing data?
So there's that..... the constant downtime and the cold customer service.
But, make your own mind up when you choose any host, I'm just letting you know my experience. I have sent the email from the old owner about the 6 months free hosting, but more for principle. I have signed up with ev1servers.net (I'm not even going to bother taking the 6 months free) and I am so far very happy and hope everything will continue running smoothly.
They are under new management as of yesterday, so if anyone does decide to go with them, I'd like to hear about their experiences.
Cheers!
