View Full Version : Gearhost dilema

For the last 3 weeks I´m been searching for a good win2k reseller host.

So far I like what I read about gearhost.com

However, I have some doubts.

1. It is a new host so like most business on the begging they should have good support and prices. What about in long term?

2. What will happen to prices?

My last host (halfpricehosting.com) change their prices rising from $50 to $150 in a year. Plus, they reduce the reseller discount and even took the discount out in the smallest plans.

3. They have some good reviews but they also have some strange pricing: How can they offer so much bandwith on every plan and charge $10/month per extra GB of traffic? (see WHT Pots (http://webhostingtalk.com/showthread.php?threadid=30198&perpage=15&pagenumber=2) ).

From what I read I know gearhost has raised their prices once and in their pages says (look below quoted) that prices are for a limited time only.

For a limited time GearHost is introducing its new web hosting line at a low price. Once an account is activated the account price will never change, guaranteed.
http://www.gearhost.com/

The account price will never change, but what will happen to the price of future plan I buy for my clients?

I do NOT what to star a reseller plan than will raise the plan prices. This will seriously affect my small business.

Please, advise me about what to do, including the possibility of choosing other host.

Thanks a lot to all!!

PS. Too the forum founders and moderatos: THANKS a lot for this great forum. It is being really help full.

One thing you can depend on in this world is that things will change...and that includes pricing of hosting plans. Also, what is included in those plans will continue to change. For instance, bandwidth prices have come down...but hosting plans have not because most of them include more bandwidth. Sites are using more bandwidth.

I think you just have to pick a host you are comfortable with that is priced competitively in today's market, and believe that they will remain competitive.

Warning....I said priced competitively. If they are priced well below anyone else, then you should know that is much more likely to lead to trouble in the future. Greatly discounted pricing reflects that they are willing to sell at a price far less than those established in the business believe they can be profitable. Maybe they can....if they have a better new business model....but maybe they can't.

Actually our prices have never changed and once you purchase your account with GearHost your price will never change from the price you bought in at. Maybe that wording is a little confusing on your quote from our site...

Also overages are going to $1 per GB within 24 hours, just a heads up since it really isn't $10 even right now.

There is one thing that needs to be clarified: The price is stated as $10GB/month ($0.01mb/month).

As today, Monday, 14 January 2002, at the bottom of gearhost shared prices page (click here to see it (http://www.gearhost.com/services/hosting/shared/prices-features.html ) ) the price shown is $0.01 (1 penny) per mb, and since 1GB are 1.000 mbs the price per GB is $10.

Please, take a look to the page (click here to see it (http://www.gearhost.com/services/hosting/shared/prices-features.html ) ) which I have also quoted below.

² Network transfer overage fees:
Customer sites that exceed the allotted network transfer for the selected hosting plan will be given notice by email, and the opportunity to upgrade to the next highest hosting plan with no overage fees for the month that the overage occurs. Should customer choose not upgrade, or if customer site continues to exceed monthly transfer values; customer will be billed .01 (one US penny) for each megabyte exceeded over the allotted amount.

Thanks a lot for your replies.

PS. Special thanks for your replies ryank thanks and please help me to understand why u say is $1gb/month

I think that would be $10 per GB (pretty high!).

0.01 (1 penny) x 1000MB (1GB) = $10

Something else to mention:

On Monday 14th, I email gearhost asking for the prices and configurations of dedicated servers.

As today, Thursday, 17 January 2002, they have not answered my e-mail.

This is not helping me to make the decision to host with them.

4 days to answer a simple question is kind of long!!

TO CLEARIFY OVERAGE BANDWIDTH IS $1 PER GB and the site will be updated this weekend with the updated design and iControl updates.
I am kind of sorry but as Monday, 21 January 2002 the price still $10/GB on extra transfer (check it (http://www.gearhost.com/services/hosting/shared/prices-features.html)).

Furthermore, it has come to my attention the following posting (WHT thread) (http://www.webhostingtalk.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=32401&perpage=15&pagenumber=2).
On this thread, zyntax
and Intelligent Hostingit pointed out the following similarities:
Mediatemple (http://www.mediatemple.net/customer_support/new_customers/uploading_content/)
gearhost (http://www.gearhost.com/customercare/kb/3.4.html)

MediaTemple (http://www.mediatemple.net/services/web_hosting/ss/features-options-prices.html)
Gearhost (http://www.gearhost.com/services/hosting/shared/prices-features.html)

Please, ryank will you care to explain?

Finally, the price for share hosting is not $10GB/month nor $1GB/month.

It is $5GB/month (check it here (http://www.gearhost.com/services/hosting/shared/prices-features.asp))

Well this sounds better, but still far from $1gb.

Well, as time goes by I got some answer to my initial questions:

>1. It is a new host so like most business on the begging they
>should have good support and prices. What about in long term?

As we can read reviews have gone form good on the initial postins to bad lately (WHT on gearhost lately (http://www.webhostingtalk.com/showthread.php?s=&postid=236573#post236573))

>2. What will happen to prices?

So far still the same... However, after they get 5.000 clients we will see (WHT post on gearhost initial offer (http://www.webhostingtalk.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=28098&highlight=price+gearhost))

>3. They have some good reviews but they also have some
>strange pricing: How can they offer so much bandwith on every
>plan and charge $10/month per extra GB of traffic? (see WHT
>Pots ).

Price per GB is $5 but reviews are increasinlly bad.

I will give them another month before I make any further judgment but things are not looking good.

PS: Please, for all those hosting with them please share your impressions (if you don´t wanna post just email me, chilediez@yahoo.com or pm)

THANKS TO ALL

I have been doing a lot of research for reseller plans. All the emails.phone calls, live chats, for some reason have something missing, something doesn't feel right. I would pay more to have more. By doing the numbers and having an $80 - $100 monthly fee to host 10 to 20 domains is not bad. With the confidence that I'm looking for in a host I could sell 200 packages, no prob. $30,000.00 US a year clear profit is not bad.

I'm looking for a host to resell with a comprehensive package like perfectwebhosting.com. KNOW OF ANY??

The only thing wrong with perfectwebhosting.com that I found is that they don't have MySQL and they just don't give a **** about you.

Thanks for giving me the place to vent...
