View Full Version : How important is Control Panel interoperability to hosts?

I was wondering, if you, as web hosts, like the idea of intergrating different control panels.

I got the idea from ensim's advertisment, where they claim they can "manage" plesk server. Although I never figured out what that means.

How important is this to you? Do you have multiple-Control Panel?

Also, please post what kind of specific integration features you would like.

Or alternately, please share why you think that control panel is not important.

Thanks,

Peter

This was brought up on the plesk forums a while back, and I too could not figure it out. The whole idea just doesn't quite make sense, and I'm not sure how/why it would be done.

Well, I am not sure exactly how that would be either; I haven't seen a lot of integration. I will be going to plesk's forum to check out the discussion.

There are some possibilities,

-When you create one client in one CP, automatically create a client in all other CP. (same goes for modify/delete)

-Have the option of using one CP to reboot/shutdown all other servers, regardless of their CPs.

-A Linux panel can integrate with a windows panel, so using the Linux panel, you can provision windows hosting accounts. Same goes for other OSs.

-Others: One of the reason I raise this thread is to see what other people think integration should be, so please share your ideas.

By the way, serve-you, could you point me to the thread you were referring to? I couldn't seems to find it on plesk's discussion forum.

Thanks,

Peter

Hi Peter,
It wasn't much of a discussion, it was simply "brought up" by someone. Anyhow, the thread is here (http://forum.plesk.com/howthread.php?s=&threadid=1216&highlight=Ensim)

Oh, I see, I think I did find the thread, but there was only three posts in it. There really isn't much info I can find on Ensim/Plesk integration.

For everyone else,

What kind of control panel integrations might you like? Please post to share.

If you are a control panel developer, do you have any plan to provide integration with other control panels?

We would like to find that one perfect control panel and feel confident promoting it and only it. Hoping maybe hostgui will be it...who knows.

However, we are geared toward providing whatever I customers and resellers want. Therefore, we currently offer 4 control panels on our unix platforms plus cobalt plus windows. Users, particularly our reseller customers, are so dedicated to one in particular. Also, the tremendous differences in pricing approaches. Fortunately, our Technical Operations Center has a staff of around 20, so we have knowledgeable personnel on all.

So what do you think on the topic? Does it sounds like something that might benefit you? Or do you think that control panel integration is not useful?

Any specific example of integration that would be useful to you?

I don't think any one panel can control the functions of another and if it can why not just have that other one? I mean you could write scripts all day to pass values to a control panel and have it process orders but the more specifc features that are unique to one might not be feasible to the other. I don't really see the point in buying plesk to control ensim or the other way around. Im not sure what they mean by manage plesk, perhaps you have to install a few utilities to the plesk server to let you add it to your Ensim cluster. Again thats a pretty simple task and I may be wrong but I don't think they meant Ensim can control everything on your Plesk server. I personally don't see the advantage but my opinion is formed from assumptions so far since it doesn't sound like anyone fully knows what they mean when they say "they can "manage" plesk server" .

Integration is not a word that is very well defined, since not a lot of control panel have integration features, which is also the reason why I want to see what other people think integration should be.

Disregarding what the technical limit is, assuming you can integrate whatever you want, what are some of the things you(as a host or a CP developer) might want to integrate?
