I used to use IMail, is that still the best out there if not running Exchange? Just a few users, all using Internet E-mail. What do you recommend?

Merak Mail (http://www.icewarp.com). Great software!

And works out for lesser than IMail. I particularly like how they have integrated the mail server with Virus Scanning.

Quite robust and stable.

cheers

Well, one alternative when it comes to Windows mails servers is
MailMax

I have however used it and it didn't handle even moderate load very good. Therefore not recommended.

How would you compare this to IMail? Price is not the issue, I want the "right" software the first time around. I don't have enough resources or "need" to run Exchange, so I'm looking for the next alternative.

Well, I would guess that depends on your need. :) What do you need in a mail software?

Multiple accounts (domains for multiple IP's)

Security, solid relay options to prevent open relays

The ability to have people use outgoing mail authentication

Mailing lists would be nice, Imail has this

Just solid all around, low resource usage, no conflicts with Windows 2000.

We use both and seem to have less problems with Merak over IMail. Both can do what you are looking for. Take a look at http://www.icewarp.com/cgi-shl/Ultimate.pl it will give you some idea of how the product is and you can ask for some feedback.

Hope that helps!

i will second Mike over here

We have been using Merak for over 18 months now on our dedicated windows boxes , it has run jut fine on winNt as well as win2k box, Very stable , handles multiple domains very well.

Good documentation , and it is much more cheaper than Imail which i think costs over 2.5k for the license against 280$ which u will spend here.

Even Mailmax is a good software but not used it much .

Are there any for Linux? I am interested in starting an email service for business users - what do you recommend? The best one I have looked so far is gossamer-threads email but that is expensive. I don't want to spend that much money before having enough customers.

thanks

For Linux - well forget Linux and go the BSD way [either OpenBSD or FreeBSD] - qmail+vpopmail+courier-imap+qmailadmin is a superlative , solid email solution

All free except the box and bandwidth!
