View Full Version : Inexspensive Hosting Questions..
animeguru 01-12-2002, 02:10 AM Okay, I was refered here by a friend for a good place to find some inexspensive hosting. I'm looking for a good host to be used mainly as a fileserver. I would prefer Unix/Linux hosting over Windoze if possible. Maybe, 100MB / 3GB for say $10 or less per month??
Thanks in advance.

Its not exactly a dream, there are tons of reliable hosts offering very good plans and reliability for under $10.

asher.
EssEss 01-12-2002, 09:49 AM True.
But how many are ready to offer their services for file server? If they, you would have been flooded by offers now.
Read my post in this forum ... "100mb space with 25gb traffic....". That will clear your views.

Asher S 01-12-2002, 09:54 AM Well i dont see whats wrong with a file server. As long as the files being served are legal and since this person is only asking for 3gb of traffic, there is no reason to object :)
EssEss 01-12-2002, 10:12 AM I do see the reason. The reason is, those hosts are 'gambling', 'luring' and 'cheating' people with the offer like 10-25gb traffic per month at less than $10 per month. If you declare that you're going to use their space for file server, they know that you are definitely going to eat up the 'fake' traffic they've offered.
Nothing wrong with the legality of your file, it's wrong that you've declared that you need their space for fileserver. If you didn't declare and would have eaten up that much space, however, your account would have been disabled or the server would have been rebooted often. You suffered. Then you had shifted again.
In 'The Doc's language, you would have become a 'web-site refugee'. That's how most of the web-hosting business is done today.
If you read my other post, things will be clear....

EssEss
Asher S 01-12-2002, 10:16 AM one of my friend hosts his site at terabyte, offering 20gbs for $9.25, his site does approx. 18gbs each month and he offers downloads. They have not once pestered him :)
EssEss 01-12-2002, 10:25 AM then go with them...what's the problem? you were looking for <$10/mo host....go and test.

Asher S 01-12-2002, 10:28 AM dude, im not the one looking for hosting  LOL
and yes to the above person I would advise them of tera-byte as they dont have objections to my knowledge about such sites.

bobcares 01-12-2002, 11:09 AM Wow EssEss,
You seem to be really angry here....
Cheer up..... :)
What amazed me is that your most expensive package is at $1.83 for 25MB...
for 100 it would be 4x1.83 = 7.32 with 4GB traffic.
animeguru's request is 100MB/3GB <$10.
Are you saying that nobody can offer that (and does that include you.... )
I'm sure, there are many good hosts out here who can offer that.... :)
Have a great day :)
regards
amar

Incognito 01-12-2002, 11:21 AM One problem is we all define inexpensive differently. More specifically, is it the cheapest....or reasonably priced offering solid quality.
As to your requirements, there are hosts offering plans as low as $3.99 per month (Under $50/yr). However, do they meet your current and future needs? I can't say. By my definition though, there is so little difference between $3.99 and $9.99 or even $14.99 that I consider all three inexpensive. The price difference between $3.99 and $9.99 is $0.20 per day.
My advice is you have set an upper limit...Now evaluate all hosts who can meet that....but don't consider the price differences below that in the equation. That is, if the $9.99 offers better service than the $3.99, choose the $9.99.

Small problem here. Us cheating and lying webhosts are not allowed to bugger the customers who post in this forum with email and pm's promoting our services.

Sorry, you failed to do that :(
Animeguru, the first advice was the best. Search the offers forum for a few companies you think can take care of your site. Select about 3 or 4 and then come back to this forum, submit the names and let people tell you which one to go with/not to go with and their experiences.

Well, the lying and cheating ones need not apply (heh), but as for the honest ones, we don't have a problem with members contacting other members, just be sure you reference the thread/post and make it clear you aren't just sending them spam for the heck of it. In other words, don't just send random people offers and info about your service when they aren't requesting it.
animeguru 01-12-2002, 09:00 PM Well, I got a couple of good responses and everyone seemed to be quite eager to help me. Thanks. I'm going to go with HostCulture.
Seems to be a new company and by my searching, the owner also works with downtownhost.com. Downtown looks to have a good rep around here, I didn't see any negative comments at all.
They are offering 150MB @ 5GB per month. Cost is about $60 for the year (Grand Opening prices). I don't really need the 5GB transfer, thats a little more than double my usual traffic. However, I'd rather have access to more and not need it than go over and pay for it (that's how I came to need a new server).
The price was right and I needed a new server ASAP. I'll be sure to come back here and leace some feedback as to the quality of the host.
Again, thanks to everyone for all their help. It's nice to get some straight answers in a forum rather than flames for being a noob.

Hi Amar!
Good at arithmatic, eh!!
Well, i have 3 plans there 5, 10 and 25MB. I know a little bit of arithmatic too. I also could offer 50mb, 100mb, 500mb hosting accounts, which I did not. The reason?
Well, I'm not targetting people who want to use the server as file server. And for a standard website, 1GB is enough. If someone needs more, I can provide, but that's upgradation after her use for sometime.

www.3-95.com
$3.95 per month.
I have more people than I can shake a stick at using that very plan for Ebay file hosting, they've never even bothered to update the default Cobalt web site.
200MB
5GB
Linux based (Cobalt RaQ4r actually).
Gives you a little "play"
Since someone said no one was replying there you go.
