greetings all:

new to webhostingtalk and it looks like a great service. wish i'd found it earlier. we're a small web development company in the san francisco bay area and we're looking for a new web host for us and a few clients. i still have not found "the" host -- mostly because we want somebody localish as well as full featured, reasonably priced and reliable. quite a few fit this bill but it seems like they're all on the east coast or in texas.

hostpro (seattle) is now topping our list and bluehill and virtualis (so cal.) are in the running. best/verio (bay area) seemed good at first but they do all their virtual servers 18 hops away in florida. ideally we'd like to go with someone running servers out of a san jose data center managed by someone like exodus, digitalnation, hurricane electric but haven't found that magic hosting company.

here's what we're looking for us. we also need basic accounts for small client sites ($10-$15/month) and small (less than 10 products, light traffic, $20-$30/month) e-commerce sites.

(by the way if anyone is looking for NT servers i highly recommend intermedia.net)

Key Features
------------
- reputable/reliable/experienced serious business hosting provider
- tier 1 or close to the backbone (oc3/oc12 connection preferred)
- well supported data center/ups/daily backups, redundant systems and connection
- us. west coast provider (bay area/silicon valley/west coast)
- 99.9% up time
- 24/7 monitoring
- 24/7 tech support (email only is ok)
- unix-flavored apache server
- web-based control panel
- full featured/customizable web-based email (secure/ssl a plus)
- full featured (forwarding/autoresponders) unlimited email accounts
- personal/custom cgi-bin
- php/database/perl support
- telnet
- ssh
- ssl
- access to raw log files/web stats
- static ip
- 3rd level subdomains
- 100MB+ server space
- 2GB+ monthly transfer
- e-commerce capable (non-proprietary shopping cart, credit card processing)
- up to $50-$75 month (more if super deluxe)

Pluses
------
- affliate accounts
- secure ftp
- cold fusion
- merchant account setup
- G2 RealServer audio/video streaming
- our own mail server

thanks!!!!

Hosting Media offers all that you asked. All I can say about them: truthworthy and quite cheap.

<<Admin notice : edited URL out for spamming. It's already present in about 4 other posts....>>

This post is also not relevant. WebHostingMedia is based in NYC, not on the West Coast.

I have a feeling I might call for some 'shaming for pleasure' in a minute...

I'd also not trust any host which uses Yahoo e-mail addresses for their main contact. Any legitimate hosting company would use their own e-mails @ their own hosting company to modify DNS changes et. al.

Hmmmm.. CGI and Phyton? ROFLMAO!

Insecure order processing too......

With all these problems, you don't expect us to use them, would ya? :D This is a joke, ain't it??

(OK, now back to your regular scheduled service).

Codesmith : welcome aboard. Please excuse the interruptions up above.

I suggest you follow up what JTY suggested and have a look at them. You won't find many Linux hosts supporting CF4.5 (though it is out), though we should be able to dig some decent West Coast hosts up for you soon. If you do a search for Hostpro in these forums you'll find some comments on them.

Good luck.

thanks for the quick responses. you folks rock! prohosting seems a bit rinkydink (unlimited bandwidth and unlimited disk space? come on.) powersurge looks pretty good although they're pushing it a bit by refering to hurricane electric as "their" noc. their webmail is also a bit phony. don't see any current reviews of them. anyone who uses them care to share their experience?

thanks.

I don't know much about them... however I believe that at one point they were locate at the VDI NOC. It actually looks like they are still offering Cpanel 2.0 (YIKES!). You might want to ask them about that before signing up.

Actually, I suggest you don't consider Powersurge any more... They had some bad reviews on Usenet @ alt.www.webmaster up to late last year - still getting mixed reviews over at SitePoint.

http://www.dogvox.com/sucks.htm will tell you about the old complaints.

Sorry, keep looking.....

Thanks BC!

I remembered reading that before... just couldn't remember where. I'll have to write that URL down and monitor it. Let's all hope the list doesn't get any longer. :D

Hey Codesmith,

It's too bad my company doesn't do Unix, because our servers are right in Fremont (although the company is based in Massachusetts).

Ah, well.

I do have a recommendation for you. Give a shout over to Todd at HyperHosting (www.hyperhosting.com). I'm not sure where they are located right now, but I have been told they're going to have some servers going into Multacom down in Los Angeles (well, City of Industry, actually). I don't know if that's close enough for you or not, but it's worth talking with them. I don't know when Todd plans to have his servers up at Multacom, though, so you'll need to contact him directly.

I've never used HyperHosting, but I've got a few customers who use them for their Unix site (while using us for NT) who speak very highly of them, and I've talked with Todd a bit via ICQ a few times (we also have some servers in Multacom, so he wanted to get my feedback).

Good luck with your search!

Jason

thanks for the replies.

bc -- could you tell me where on sitepoint you saw mixed reviews of powersurge. i saw rehashing of the dogvox posting but other than that everything was positive. only bad posting was from someone with them a year ago.

fwiw, after doing more research i don't think too much weight should be given to http://www.dogvox.com/Power.htm - at the very least the 2 reviews should have dates on them. here are the original postings:

1st review 12/31/99
http://x53.deja.com/getdoc.xp?AN=567022703&CONTEXT=974232584.1763377225&hitnum=16

2nd review 10/19/99
http://x53.deja.com/getdoc.xp?AN=537324374&CONTEXT=974232584.1763377225&hitnum=17

here's powersurge's reply to the 1st review:
http://x73.deja.com/getdoc.xp?AN=572463429&CONTEXT=974233557.1174601747&hitnum=13

if anyone has a current (last 6 months) bad experience with powersurge, please post.

thanks for the continued suggestions. at this point powersurge is still in the running although i am a bit concerned about their older software offerings (ie. php 3.0) will post more when i find out. still looking hostpro -- really might be worth it to go with cadillac hosting.
