View Full Version : Just registered HostingRatings.com!
greggish 01-10-2002, 12:38 AM I already have HostingForums.com and HostingQuestions.com and just decided that I should have a Ratings site to go along with those. Boy!, was I surprised when I typed HostingRatings.com into Whois and saw it was available.
Now, I just have to get off my ass and start building these sites. I think the three...
1. HostingForums.com
2. HostingRatings.com
3. HostingQuestions.com
...will work great as an integrated suite of sites linking and promoting each other. Anybody have any advice on the best way to go about building them. Which one do you think it makes the most sense to start with? I think trying to build all three at once is more than I will be able to handle. I'd appreciate any input.
pcsteve 01-10-2002, 02:26 AM Wow..excellent domains there.
Here is the order i would go about from start to last.
1. HostingRatings.com
2. HostingQuestions.com
3. HostingForums.com
That's it.
Quick summary why. Basically, HostingRatings.com is the easiest to do first because you could get a listing of web hosts and rate them in some fashion.
Then that would lead to users wanting more information about web hosting. Thus HostingQuestions.com.
Finally, HostingForums.com because you will at this point yopu'll have enough traffic to make the forums a success. (a forum can't become a success unless u have ppl using it...right)
my 1.5 cent
;)
greggish 01-10-2002, 05:37 AM Yup, I agree. That's the order that makes the most sense. Thanks for the input.
I'm curious about something else. Do you think it a good idea to put chat rooms on a forum site? Iwas thinking about offering this option on HostingForums.com but I'm thinking that might result in a decreased number of posts as people take their discussions to the Chat rooms. People might enjoy the chat but then the the amount of information and Host feedback on the board may go down. What do you think? Thanks.

nothing personal here but:
"Oh great, yet another one..."

No personal offense taken...but don't you mean "Oh great, yet another three..." :D :D
But, seriously, I do get your point that there are many of these sites alrady out there. Alot of Host directory sites, but not nearly as many good Forums sites and I don't think there are too many really great comprehenshive easy to navigate HostingFaq's out there...which is what I want to do with HostingQuestions.com. Anyway, as corny as it sounds, I think if you do something well then there's room for one more. :)
greggish 01-10-2002, 07:31 AM By the way, in case you were wondering why this thread is in the "Advertising Forums", all I can say is that I originally posted it in the "Lounge", but for some reason the moderators decided to move it here. I'm not trying to sell these domains. I'm just trying to get some input on how to develop them.
Chicken 01-10-2002, 10:17 AM In taking a second look at it (at the request of greggish), I've decided that this should be fine back in the Lounge. Sorry for the confusion.

I would just skip out on the chat room. You already have a medium for posting messages, so why add another? It would be like "competing with yourself"... ;)
If you get everyone grouped in one place, then there will be more activity and thus a much better forum environment.
bobcares 01-11-2002, 03:40 AM Hi!
What is the base revenue model in these sites and what is the target market ?
Ads don't do well these days. So you need to think a bit more for revenues.
The point on USP's is silly. You can be very good by just being ordinary... but you have to be good..... That matters.
Why not have another site on the lines of elance.com where one can post requirements and others can bid ... openly the way elance works... I love open biding... :)
I wish you the very best in this venture.
Have a great day :)
regards
amar

No I really meant "another one": I have nothing against your faq or forums sites, it's really the rating thing that is kind of a repeat.
Let me tell you what I would consider a GREAT site, by the way: a meta-rating directory, that would automatically query all existing directories and show an average of a company's ratings.
I mean, it's quite common for hosts to offer a link to a directory, so that our clients can rate us. Now, to be sure that our ratings are visible, we would need a full page with at least a dozen links to various directories.
I dream of a meta-directory...
greggish 01-11-2002, 03:59 AM A meta-directory is a great idea. I'm going to work on planning that out. I'd be sending traffic to my competition...but I'm more interested in making a great site than making big $$$ :D :D
GeorgeC 01-11-2002, 08:48 PM greggish, I like your domains, but one potential delima is whether you'd need to register the singular versions of them as well, such as:
Hostingforum.com
No doubt should you anticipate your sites getting popular, you should snap up variations of your domains as well.
greggish 01-11-2002, 09:05 PM I think HostingForums.com is the only one of the three where the singular version makes sense, and that was already taken when I registered it. Besides, I like HostingForums.com better than HostingForum.com anyway.
jamenjaw 01-12-2002, 03:10 AM hehe so your the one who got thoes before I did
