View Full Version : test/backup server suggestions
sakushamishou 08-29-2004, 02:28 AM I was hoping you guys could shed a little light on things.
I'm looking for a backup/test server, as I already have a primary one. This server will extremely small amounts of traffic. Mostly, I'd be using it for shell access to my primary server, as well as backing up websites in case of outage. Datatransfer will likely even be under a gig a month, unless my primary server goes down (and even then, my existing websites would be considered under "throttled" service).
I'm also going to use it to further my linux guru-wanabe education.
SO, I am looking for a server that is unmanaged. Preferably with linux and no control panels. Redhat 7.2, Enterprise, or Fedora. If I gotta have a control panel -- since most places have them bundled in, anyways -- ensim, plesk, or cpanel would be alright, especially since I'm trying to teach myself their innards, anyways.
I'm considering:
ev1servers (where my primary server alread is)
serverpronto
and
tomsyer
I admit, I'm looking for cheap. The server does not need to be bullet fast, and I don't need supreme connect. My focus is on reliable and my preferance is "cheap". Paypal is OK, CC is OK.
CretaForce 08-29-2004, 02:56 AM Why don't try to get a VPS? There is cheaper than a Dedicated Server.
sakushamishou 08-29-2004, 02:59 AM I need a dedicated IP and shell access. (I should have added that to the initial list).
I altered my sshd config file, so that only my home IP has access to sshd. I'd like to give myself a *little* security net, and allow a second IP address, one that has little to no possibility of changing.
Diamond Edge 08-29-2004, 03:10 AM Take a look at Global Datacenter. I am currently using them for several of my dedicated servers, which i colo to them, and Could not be Happier with the service, support, and network. Excelent uptime.
I also provide dedicated server management for clients, and i have worked with several networks in which my clients have already had their dedicateds on, and have found that their networks have not been as reliable as Global DC's
If you do not use professional server management, they give up to 5 free OS Reinstalls/month, which can help you out if you damage things and need a fresh install.
Just a word on my past experiences, i wish you well in finding an excellent dedicated host, as i have done with Global DC.
Thanks for your time,

sakushamishou 08-29-2004, 03:29 AM Weeeell, I've been with ev1servers since their Rackshack days, back in 2002. Since then, I've been an admin in training. I won't claim I'm good at what I do, but I sure as hell learn every day.
My experience with ev1 is.... reasonable. So long as I don't a) get hacked, or b) screw myself over, ev1 is there for me. Ev1 is definately, totally unmanaged.
I was rootkitted fairly recently, a few months ago, and had to wipe my HD and start over again. In that, I could definately have used the free OS reinstall, since ev1 took the oppertunity to charge me my little finger for a fresh install of redhat.
Since then, I've been, almost paranoid about being hacked. Locked all the little doors, sealed the cracks. That's when I changed the sshd config file so that I could only access shell through my home computer.
The $50 range is definately reasonable. Anyone else have anything to say about http://www.globaldc.com ? (That is they, right?). Or my other two contenders?
relichost 08-29-2004, 03:57 AM well, although globaldc do not have the greatest amounts of bandwidths they're cheap enough for a dedicated. They do not cost too much more than a VDS/VPS and as such makes a more reasonable and reliable test machine as you arenot at the mercy of others not using all the servers CPU. The support is brilliant and one of the most important things to me, have a sense of humour. I recommend them. I am currently saving for a second server with them.
LayeredTech has a $58 server. You get good support and a good DC.
sakushamishou 08-29-2004, 05:21 AM Eeeh, in light of recent threads, I think I'll remove tomsyer from the list. I'm getting cyberwings flashbacks.
search for serverpronto too, doesnt sound like the best place either
sakushamishou 08-29-2004, 05:29 AM I tend to take those searches with a grain of salt. I know when I was first looking into dedicated, Rackshack had a horrible reputation, however I've been with them for a few years now and the only problems I've ever had were created by me. After all, I'd never have been rootkitted if I ran a tight ship, eh?
However, it does sort of seem like... any dedicated hosting under $50 is a possible scam....
sprintserve 08-29-2004, 05:46 AM GlobalDC I believe is single homed Cogent. Nothing against Cogent of course (but Single homed is another issue). But just so you know.
tehtech 08-29-2004, 06:06 AM Tomsyer.net = reseller of layertech.
EV1servers has new policies on "hacked" servers I believe.
Just saying you'd probably rather spend about $10 more a month and be in a good dc and have staff who will help you (even when you cause your own problems). Logic will tell you that a $29/mo server won't give you this. And the fact that they charge for reboots after 1 is not an opinion, but rather a reality according to their pages.
alexmue 08-29-2004, 06:56 AM a VPS is definately the best for you.
take a 19.90$ linode
Diamond Edge 08-29-2004, 07:18 AM Global DC is run from two locations, a business address, which is indeed in a residential area, I do not live in the United States, but in my travels I have dropped in on Global DC’s Residential site and I had no reason for concern about it being located in a residential area, as the building was secure, when examining the inside of the Data Centre, you can see that there is no cause for alarm, several precautions are put in place to ensure maximum network connectivity, with methods which include UPS, Backup lines.
With regards to the second location, Global DC lease a rack in a telecommunications centre, which is secure and reliable like the first location.
If you have any questions about Global DC, please get in contact with me and I will attempt to get him to get a representative to talk to you about their company in this thread. If you are interested in getting a dedicated server and would like to not worry about management, please feel welcome to ask for a free quote from us.
dkitchen 08-29-2004, 07:31 AM Hi,
From what I've heard EV1 are getting very restrictive and can never do anything unless it says in "the book".
There's absolutely no point getting a dedicated with 1000GB+ of transfer when you're only going to be using 1. A VPS is probably the best option for you.
Looks like you don't quite understand what a VPS is, so yes you do get your Dedicated IP and you do get root shell access too. From what I've heard UML is the best platform for people who want to learn as it gives you more integration with the host system. Have a look around and I'm sure you'll find a good service for under $30 a month.
