Oh my god. Am I missing something here. I just noticed someone is offering $40 per Megabit at advertising section(actual usage). How low can it go. I mean if convert it to 95th percentile thing. You are virtually paying $20 per Megabit or less. Hehe, is that too good to be true.

convert it to 95% and you're paying more like $60 than $40 :)

Anyway, is it still REALLY affordable.

$40,960 / GB

I'd rather send my MEGs by fedex.

Sorry I meant to say $40 per Megabit.. I just made correction with above post. Thats about 12.5 cent per gb of bandwidth

Before everyone goes "OMG How can they do this" make sure you ask them:

If Cogent goes down, what happens to my traffic? Does it get routed through your Level 3 connection or am I down too?

Just cause it sounds like a good deal doesn't mean it is a good deal.

Well, we are in the Denver POP. If cogent goes down, the cities they link together via the Denver POP will also. You think they would allow that?

Also, we are working out a contract with Genuity for burst rates to take care of the pipe if cogent does stop responding. We currently have Yipes! and we did however cancel our deals we were making with L3, for the record.

Although if cogent does stop responding, I would just walk upstairs and knock on their door (we are 1 floor away from them).

I know some of you guys have heard horrible things about cogent because of other providers, but they have fiber to them and it's usually a line issue or a router issue. Not Cogent directly.

Also, why did you need to slam our deal? It isn't a bad deal. :)

Very high ping times, gradually increasing and then tripling between mci01 and den01. Is this common?

Welcome to the world of Cogent. While we love it for cheap bandwidth, just make sure customers understand the latency is terrible.

lightone, MikeA's comment was valid - he wasn't bashing. Especially if you add the "for good" part to the end. We use Cogent too. But we are also watching carefully. They will not be around long the way they are burning cash. Rumor has it also, they are havinga tough time with the netrail integration because they only kept on 2 engineers from netrail (who knows? but it could explain why the latency is so bad, especially when you consider netrail had one of the top rated networks before all this). What are you going to do if (some say 'when') they fold? You sure can't get bandwidth that cheap anywhere else.

Just make sure your customers know the price is dependant on Cogent. If you intend to honor the price with any provider, then put it in writing and I'll send you some servers.

The phrases "you get what you pay for" and "too good to be true" exist for a reason

"Allow"? Do you think outages or failures get approved by the victim beforehand? Is this Camelot, where one can ensure excellent weather by passing a law that requires it? I'm guessing you're looking for a different word there.

In all seriousness, I have tremendous respect for the gumption of providers who will throw in their fate with metro Ethernet providers such as Cogent. It's quite a gamble and it might be difficult to secure alternate plans. My personal hope is that such companies survive long enough to drive down rates for traditional connectivity from traditional backbones.

If anyone has received the latest Boardwatch backbone rating guide (just this week I got mine), Cogent was rated dead-last for performance :(

Ummm...3 words....Maryland Train Tunnel. I don't think that those guys expected the fire that practically took down most of the net on the east coast. Lets all think about this. What are the backbones on....Fiber....what is Fiber....glass hairs that run through plastic sleeves....where are most fibers....in the ground. Backhoe + Some Idiot = Network Downtime....it happens.

Also, why did you need to slam our deal? It isn't a bad deal. :)

Like UmBillyCord stated, I didn't slam. I just stated the obvious. If I pay for 100% Cogent...what happens if they go down. My company (WebAuthorities) is gonna offer Cogent too, but our price starts at $125 per mbps. This is to help cover the "possibility" that Cogent goes down. If it goes down, then your traffic gets routed through one of 7 other backbones.

My question to you is, IF your Cogent link goes down, what happens to my traffic? At $40 per mbps, I'm thinking I'll be down too.
