View Full Version : A rack server at home?

I am wondering, is there any difference between a rack server and a workstation? That is, can I just buy a rack server and use it as a workstation, put it on my desk, plug it in my usual household socket, ...?

Is there anything special that I might need to do? Mount it? Secure it, ...?

I guess my answer is yes and no.

Can you have a rack server at home and use it as a workstation?

Yes, you can but it might not work that well. Rack servers are measured in "U's". 1U, 2U etc. A lot of the rack servers are 1U. That's something like 1.7 inches high (19 inches wide). Because of the slim height, there may not be any pci slots in the server. That makes putting a video card in difficult. Depending on the system etc. video might be built into the motherboard.

The also tend to be loud. Because they are all stacked in a "rack" they tend to have better cooling fans (the servers get warm). You might not want that loud of a server as a workstation.

Having said all that, I have a nice little 1U Netra sitting just below my desk. I don't really use it as a "workstation" but more as a play/testing server.

Peter, you should be able to use a 1u/2u racktype machine just like any other, i'm not sure why you want to though.

Yeah, rack servers usually cost more for the same specs.

Chicken, that looks nice! But doesn't that block the air circulation?

The reason I am asking is that I was wondering what if I colo a server and decided to take it back, maybe I could use it as a workstation.

Or maybe if I signup with efreeserver.com and get a free server(although that, if that does happen, will only comes after 20 months).

Thanks for the info, now I know that a rack server, if nothing else, can at least be used as a workstation.

Thanks,

Peter

The desk's small shelf that it sits on used to have a back, but I knocked it out. Air flows freely. :D

To answer your Q: it was about our companies new facility.
ps: not to violate the rules, the offer was for a free co-lo.
Chicken, feel free to remove my post if it violated the rules.
