Would you choose a host that didn't require FTP or Web access to update you website?

Details:

What do you think: To upload you site...all you have to do is go to your network folder (in a mac the chooser), log in to your server, and a hard drive image mounts on your desktop...this image contains all of your sites files and more...in the directory you get free software, templates, and more...

What if your host provided a community system, similar to eworld & AOL...where you could chat, send email, explore articles, news and more....a coloborative effort of web sites to bring the customers more than just web hosting, but an interactive service?

Thoughs??

onthecatwalk,
Well, more features is always better. If you ask a customer if he wants more features, he will always say yes. The issue is the cost or feature-sacrificed. So, what exactly does the user have to pay for this?

By the way, is it available for PC?

Peter

That'd be great, and the rest of the features sound interesting too.

The first one is possible with DAV (on Windows it is known as WebFolders). I know some hosting company offer this feature (mostly are using Windows). We do offer it, but as far as I can see, it is one of the least used feature :(
About the second one. If you offer that, you are not only a web hosting company, you are an ASP as well (ASP: Application Service Provider).

as far as cost...its free to the customer, no rate hikes or anything like that. My goal is to make this available to windows and mac, iits almost like file sharing but not quite....it isnt as easy to setup as you think....i have 4 devoted servers to this project its really a hard thing to do.....like Apple's pholosify, (im the #1 speller, they should have spell check on this thing), they are well known for there easy to use equipment, everything is so easy to do....the other mac hosts havent yet made there system "user friendly", I am trying to do this. I want web hosting to be as easy as 1-2-3.....I would love to have software on the Mac called iHost...like iTunes, iPhoto..and have it set up your account for you and everything...no customer service, no hassles...just simple 1-2-3.

Anyone know is there is a free source of news and weather that can be tapped into or something like that??

Actually I would prefer my host to just concentrate on hosting..sites which try to provide too many services, especially that which is outside their area of speciality will most likely spread themselves too thin over the long term.

It's not hard to do this with Windows. You simply make a desktop shortcut to something like ftp://user:password@ftpserver.com

I think some of our customers have been doing it for a while now. It is handy to be able to drag and drop.

well this plan was in the works long before then but...yes in a way i am....my comapny needs to grow....customers don't worry...I am the only one working on this...the web hosting techs are not allowed near it..its like a secret project....but I want make sure that everyone is focusing on web hosting, when i start a new project (like some people) I don't take all the resources away from the main focus, i just do it.....all i do here all day is sit on this site and post, or yell at people , i need something to do! I consiered getting some PC's to keep me busy, we all know how much they go down. sorry PC people, but it had to be said. i don't know..i guess i just wanna make this service a whole lot different...it is a pain for people to contact the host, us setup the server, talk to them about all the stuff...i just want to make the customers experience more enjoyable. I am always looking for ways to expand...never hurts unless you are like all these other companys that tries to do to much to quick and they go under...i dunno
