View Full Version : 3 Month Review - JVDS.com
Steven 08-26-2004, 10:06 PM This is a 3 month review of jvds, which also owns vpscolo. I wil update again at 6 months.
Product: I have the 64mb petite vds running Redhat, very stable imho. I just use it to run nagios.
Network: The network is great, speeds are good. I trace over verio, ive always liked verio, latency is ~75ms which is not that bad.
Support: Support is decent. A few weeks after I got my vds, I wanted it rebuilt with redhat (had debian at the time). Within maybe 30 mins it was up an running redhat.
Overall they are a decent provider, I'd recommend to anyone. Rus is a great guy, always willing to go the extra leg to help out. If your looking for a new vps provider go JVDS you will never look back. You get more then your moneys worth.
mattwade 08-26-2004, 10:35 PM Agreed....I used jvds for a short period for backup nameserver on a freebsd vps and Rus was always very helpful.
JHServers 08-26-2004, 11:13 PM That's a great view of jvds. Definetely gives me a good impression to keep them in mind for future projects or needs.
LP-Trel 08-26-2004, 11:30 PM JVDS.com powers one of my many free webhosting services and uptime has been awesome. Support is great and Rus is a great guy. I also highly recommend JVDS/Vpscolo. :)
thefast 08-27-2004, 04:56 PM My turn ... we have a few VPS with JVDS and one dedicated ... i can only say one thing, the support is great ... seems like Rus never ever sleeps :)
They appear to be hosted in San Diego (my home town =)
Very reputable datacenter (American Digital Network).
Steven 08-27-2004, 06:33 PM They utilize many datacenters.

I believe they even offer you the option of choosing the datacenter you'd like to be in?
thefast 08-27-2004, 06:35 PM They do use multiple datacenters :)
akabook 09-03-2004, 11:05 AM I tried their vps on one of their FreeBSD plans for about a month. My website akabook.com utilize java to retrieve book price information from 40+ websites. My problem with their hosting is intermittently the site would be down, though very briefly. The biggest problem is my result page would not be able to show information from all book stores, which means, either my application had not had enough time to get all the pages, or the processor is too overloaded that it had not had time to process all the requests in time.
Same code works perfectly on other hosts, just like the one I am currently using.
Probably my plan is too basic and the system does not have enough cpu power or the bandwidth is not good enough for my applications.
It sounds like you might of been in one of the old data centers as the new ones do have a much high uptime

Have U ever tried to explain to Rus, because I know him as very helpful.
bigwalt 09-03-2004, 11:38 AM I have nothing but good things to say about JVDS. I have been with them for about 18 months. Great network and great support from Rus. I don't think he sleeps.
If you're looking to take the next step from shared virtual to VPS, this is the place to be.
rasputinj 09-03-2004, 11:47 AM I have a VPS with Rus at VPSColo, they offer great customer service and I have had some great uptime. Rus and the crew have always gone out of their way to help out, and I agree I believe Rus never does sleep.
I have also found Rus to be a very honest person if you want to know if your site or sites are the way to go with a VPS.

Same feelings here, great support and always helping out so i can't imagine u ever explained ur problem and him not trying to help u out.
akabook 09-03-2004, 03:49 PM I did not ask him to explain because I think probably system used for my plan is not powerful enough. But the plan was very cheap, so I really did not want to complain.
akabook 09-03-2004, 04:11 PM My post is not intended to say anything bad about jvds. I just want to let others know they have to consider their needs when choosing a host and plan.
I installed Apache + Tomcat and used JSP for my websites. Probably their FreeBSD plans are not enough for this configuration. It took me some time to get the pair work and when finally they worked together, I did not get the performance I expected. So, probably there was some tuning I needed to do to have best performance. I don't know. So, I just quitted and switched to 4java.ca for my JSP hosting.
But during my about 2 weeks's stay with 4java.ca, their DNS server failed once for hours. Fortunately I used zoneedit.com for my DNS.
For JSP hosting, I have had experience with lunarpages.com, hostgator.com, downtownhost.com, and now 4java.ca
Among them, lunarpages is the worst. I used their shared JVM hosting, and I was there for only several days and they blamed my application for dragging the system down. So, I moved to hostgator and still bought a shared JVM plan. Again, every now and then they will have problems with the JSP pages, but it was OK and at least they did not blame my application like lunarpages did. Again, in a shared JVM environment, you do have to expect now and then the system will become slow and has to be restarted by the administrator. But I do know it is not my application's problem because the same application runs on downtownhost.com's private JVM plan perfectly for more than half a year.
Downtownhost.com is an OK JSP hosting company. Some down time, but not much. But their technicians do not seem to be particularly competent when you request to do more than listed on their website.
Until now, I vote for 4java.ca for their technical competence. Guys there seem to know their work very well. But again, they did have an outrage for their main site lately.
All the above comments are just regarding JSP hosting. Many people have said good things about lunarpages.com, but not all of them are using Java and JSP. So, I assume for ordinary website hosting, lunarpages.com may be OK, but not for me! Especially after their "technician" blamed my application for dragging the whole system down.
gprime 09-03-2004, 04:45 PM I have a few files (really small, about 1-4MB , about 300MB combiend) that use a lot of bandwidth. I was thinking of getting an dedicated unmettered server just for these files, but then i noticed JVDS's 10mbit unmetered shared hosting plans. Has anyone tried these? What are the speeds like? Is it TRUELY unmetered or do they kick you off if you hog the line?

Just ask them, u will get an honest answer.
BorderLine 10-30-2004, 04:28 PM My 2cents.
I've been with VPSColo for about 3 months now, and I just want to give their support team a HUGE thumbs up.
So far I've had the pleasure of dealing with Rus, Robin, Jim and Eric.
I just wanted to point out that Rus (as great as he is) is not the only one keeping things afloat.
Yes, I've had to bug them quite abit (to the point I was getting tired of bugging them), and YES it was all my own fault.
Through out all the dealings with them, they have all been very courteous and polite.
I've always gotten a response in less than 5 minuts (normally by the time I can log into my email, they've responded ) weather it's during the day, or at 1am (I'll let you guess which it normally is).
If the person I'm currently dealing with is not quite sure about how the handle the situation, they've told me that they're checking into it, or have left a message of someone else to get back with me.
On top of all the great support, I've had 100% uptime!
I would highly recomment them to anyone looking for something better than a shared plan, but not quite upto a dedicated server.

You may do better with a Virtuozzo based VPS. I installed H-Sphere on a VPS recently ( Tektonic.net 256MB ram for $50/m) and it ran fine. It didn't run well on the lower plan.
It was pretty funny when I phoned him to upgrade it.
He asked
1) Are you running Tomcat? (Yes)
2) Are you running Postgres (Yes)
3) Are you running MySQL (Yes)
I didn't have a problem paying the extra $10-15 dollars to upgrade.
BTW I have contacted Rus(VPSColo) before & I'm considering a VPS with him aswell. I just think Tomcat may prefer Virtuozzo & not be 'dragging the server down'
