View Full Version : HostGUI
The Prohacker 01-08-2002, 10:52 PM I wanted to make a post, asking what people thought of this project.....
HostGUI (http://www.hostgui.com)
From the screenshots, and reading the forums, it looks very promising, and from talking with Jag via IM. I found out, alot of info, some people might wanna know about it...
What I'm told is the expected release is Q1 of 2002, and it doesn't seem like Nocsoft, which has been pushed back for a year now... The pricing also seems very competitive, starting at $500 USD onetime fee, or a $100 USD per month for 6 month lease.
This also includes, a support and billing system, and an easily skinable frontend, scripted in PHP, with a C++ backend....
With all the current problems with Cpanel, this is truely a god send, and since unlike Cpanel, with only one developer, there is a team of developers working to squash bugs, and the software, will also not do nightly automatic updates... You will have a choice to install this new release or not.....
HostGUI will take advantage of suExec, and Apache 2 once released and stable.... And sense JagPC is currently based off of Cpanel, they will be offering a Cpanel importer for customers wanting to switch over. This is what really appealed to me....
The HostGUI support forums are here. (http://www.hostgui.com/support/forum)
And you can see a demo here. (http://hostgui.com/demo/1/)
I've been lucky to be able to talk to Jag one-on-one for this info, and maybe this will help other users thinking about purchesing this product...
* This is not ment to be an ad for HostGUI, only information to help others...
universal2001 01-09-2002, 03:26 AM I have been waiting for this cpanel for a long time. Hope it comes out soon.. Time to ditch cpanel.. To many probs :)
Walter 01-09-2002, 09:06 AM Sure, an interesting development, especially with SuExec - but I would wait a little and not use a brand new software for my business.
Just my 2c.
kosmo 01-09-2002, 11:10 AM I would never call "demo" an ugly screenshot.
My 2 (euro-)cents.
kosmo
Just to clarify a mistake on prohackers post, that link on our site is not a demo its just a screenshot.
Kosmo - as for the "ugly" comment, well you are entitled to your opinion.
If you have any useful criticism you can IM or email me. Thanks
Im glad to see people are interested :).
davidb 01-09-2002, 01:23 PM It looks nice. Im not complaining, it looks like it could be a nice replacement for cpanel, but I was thinking about 2 weeks ago. I currently use plesk. I had my other server just get a ram upgrade and was going to put a control panel on it. I spent a few days thinking about it. I thought plesk would be nice, then I would have two plesk servers. I also thought about h-sphere because it would be a nice second option. Then I decided to go with freevsd(not so much a cp, but I think you see what I mean). I realized that more or less, all control panels are the same. I mean there are a few differences in features, but none the less they are all the same. I honestly couldnt not think what I would want to make it unique, but I just think that you need more then whats there. So thats my opinion, it just seems like every other control panel.

Not really. suExec doesn't make it unique, but far more secure than e.g. Cpanel.
Maniac 01-09-2002, 05:41 PM Nice site ;)

Not really, it may look like it on top, but since Jag is going to be a former user of Cpanel, they can learn from their mistakes. Which will generally make this better softrware...
I've noticed that users mostly want Cpanel over Plesk, not really over useablity, but they want those features, and Plesk doesn't offer that.. Besides, I really don't like how plesk handles some things, and you have to sometimes find a fix to make something work... Same with Cpanel, thats why I'm so excited about this software....
AlaskanWolf 01-09-2002, 08:12 PM Well I just spent the morning putting all my rants on the cpanel forums area of what ticks me off with cpanel
I can tell you that once HostGUI is released, I will be getting a copy to test out. plus jag use to live in Alaska, so that just adds to that "homegrown Alaska feeling" hehe
In all serious now, I think HostGUI will have some definite positives over the rest of the crowd because
1. jag is a hosting company
2. he has used cpanel and knows its flaws and was able to create a panel that's better
3. he has more then 1 person working on it, therefore that will hopefully lead to FASTER SUPPORT and FASTER BUG KILLS.
I hope jag doesn't go the "distributor" route because honestly I think that's one thing that is killing Cpanel, Nick is putting to much responsibility on the distributor, which at times on various problems knows less then we do about specific issues.
As long as the end customer is happy, and the techs and admins are happy, I think any panel will go very far and HostGUI is the one to lead the way.
Good Luck jag
Tim Greer 01-09-2002, 10:41 PM I just wanted to post and say that it can be easy to assume that all control panels are alike. However, there's many differences, some are subtle and some are major. A lot of it has to do with the design of it, and how well it performs, how stable it is and how useful it is, not to mention how secure it is. If we felt that there was an option that would be a viable rather than developing a new control panel software, such as modifying some exiting one or putting up with some existing control panel software options that wouldn't cause problems or perform as they should, we'd have had no real reason to develop one. Furthermore, we wanted to make sure that this software didn't take control of things you don't want it to, even if you will have pretty much complete control. And, finally, that it won't be in the way whereas it'll prevent people from doing what they want to do on and with their servers (be it a simple, common task, or something more customized), whereas some software will break if you attempt to secure your server or how it's configured -- especially on a shared hosting environment server. There are many things, many of which are not apparent on the surface that we felt are very important to be attentive to, while offering what we believe to be a superior, feature filled product. I hope that others will feel the same and have a reason to check into it when it's ready, for the same reasons that were important to us. After all, we'd not have developed it if we felt otherwise. Thanks.
DigitalXWeb 01-10-2002, 12:13 AM Looks promising.. Hopefully the end product will function without the headaches of some of the others.. I'll be keeping an eye out for the release or beta testing..
Just by looking at HostGUI, it looks like it has a clean and cut design that the user won't get confused of what to do (self explanatory). JaguarPC got really reliable and professional people (1+) working on the control panel so more things would be done. I don't think JaguarPC would want to develop a control that for their own clients that is not reliable.
Incognito 01-11-2002, 02:40 PM Only have one complaint re: Hostgui.
I WANT IT YESTERDAY!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Hopefully, we will get an expected release date soon.
