Sempron is basically AMD's celeron series. i.e. cheaper chips not geared for maximum performance.

Sempron is the new name for the "duron" product AMD's value line. They actually perform better than the celerons ;)

AMD processors seem to be doing better than the intels
Apart from xeon's as there just amazing :D and i dont know anything about the 64bit amd cpus so i cant comment on them

Hi,

Been making me wonder for a while now what they are, seems strange to rebrand such a well known name.

Anyway, in my opinion AMD's Duron chips are miles faster than Intel's Celeron series, and half the price too. Theres a comparison of the two here: http://www.amd.com/us-en/Processors/ProductInformation/0,,30_118_11599_11604,00.html

At the moment, AMD have got a good hold on the market with their 64bit Athlon and Opteron series, as far as i've heard Intels new 64bit Xeon was a complete failiure so time will tell who's going to win the "64bit Wars"

The best place to check out the comparisons would be toms hardware guide theres always tons of cpu tests etc there.

well the technology behind it is roughly the same. so just a cut down verison of the XP. good value of workstation but definately not for games...

The sempron uses the same chipset and socket as the 64 Bit CPU (current XP, FX) but not the same as the Opteron.

The difference between the 64 XP and FX is the Sempron has the 64 Bit coding removed.

It will only run as 32 bit.

It will only run as 32 bit. The Sempron is available on both Socket 462 and 754. It will actually replace the AthlonXP as the budget processor.

Although it should truely replace the Duron line of products, the AthlonXP has become so cheap, there has been no need for the Duron line in the market and therefore, the AthlonXP will be discontinued as well.

On socket 462 it is practically the same as the AthlonXP but with the core and FSB speeds changed as well as the L2 cache on the higher models halved to 256KB.

I love how AMD updates there roadmap every month. :(

Originally the XP was to become the 64. As I now see that has changed.

I did not know about the 462 socket.

But the major difference between the 64 and the sempron is the 64/32 bit coding.

I wish they wouldn't change that thing every other month. :(

it can explained best by this article:
http://www.anandtech.com/cpuchipsets/showdoc.aspx?i=2139

basically, Sempron has two flavors:
K7 Sempron, 2800+ or lower, Thoroughbred-B core, socket A, support DDR333, 128K L1, 256K L2
K8 Sempron, 3100+ or higher, striped down hammer core (no 64-bit), socket 754, supports DDR-400, 128K L1, 256K L2, and the winner: on-die memory controller

K8 Sempron can be a excellent budget server CPU....

The only issue I see with it as a server CPU is the socket differentation between it and the Opteron. Basically you can't upgrade to the Opteron, which is the optimal Server CPU. :(

We just put up a development box with a Sempron in it. Running FreeBSD now without much of a hitch. Quite nice for the price ;)

well, how often folks really upgrade the CPU, either colocated or in dedicated servers....

also, K8 sempron 3100+ yields only 62w of heat, a great plus in rack-mount's.

yep, K8 semprons are gonna take some part of celeron's pie. tnx God for that. celeron isn't a server cpu at all.
