Are there any decent hosts and domain registrars (or hosts that handle both) that accept payment via bank/Debit card?

I assume you mean the ones without the visa/mc logo that work like credit cards? I'm not sure those are widely accepted anywhere, but I could be wrong.

The Mastercard Maestro, Cirrus Debit cards dont work on net as they require a PIN for every purchase

Visa has Electrons which are of two types:
1) For electronic use: you cannot use this on net
2) Both offline +online use, kinda a mix of credit card + debit card

If you have the 2nd Visa then you can use it on net, else you need to get a credit card.

Most UK companies accept Switch and Solo.

I have a UK merchant account and they will not allow Visa Electron, I believe this is normal but could be wrong.

I have found that I can use a Visa electron on american sites as a normal Visa Credit card but this will not work in the UK.

Mostly all debit cards with the Visa or Mastercard logo will be accepted at any U.S. based merchant. I've had no problems shopping with both Visa and Mastercard debit cards at any merchant (including hosts).

Also, I beg to differ with Varun as I have a Mastercard debit card w/ the Cirrus logo and have had no problems making online purchases.

there are *some* merchant accounts which dont support debit cards. some do but some older ones dont.

How can you make transactions on the net without the PIN Code?
I once called Mastercard support and they say a PIN is needed everytime. I use Maestro and could never get it to work on net :(

If it has a 16 digit visa/mastercard number on it, you can use it anywhere. Otherwise, it's just an ATM card, which cannot be usually used online.

I have a Visa Electron card and I use it in purchasing on the net (ex: Amazon, Ebay, etc...) and also for paying my host (Aletia). I also registered my 2 domain names at 000domains.com and namecheap.com using my Visa Electron card.

It works great.

Most people use SWITCH/SOLO in UK, is electron also that widely used?

I know Natwest and The Woolwich use Electron and Delta instead of Switch / Solo.
Not sure on other banks. But Natwest are very big

This is weird. Jeff, can you tell me what sites your Cirrus card works on, I could never ever get mine to work on net :bawling:

I'd have to disagree, in my experience most Natwest current account holders have Solo and some have Switch. I was Solo until a few months ago, ask to upgrade to Current Plus and got a Switch card as a replacement. All of my pals who bank with Natwest has either Solo (most popular) or Switch. I've not yet seen a NatWest Electron/Delta card, although they probably do exist.

Sorry I have been mistaken. Sorry for the wrong info. I have accounts with Barclays and Natwest and got mixed up. It is Barclays with Visa Electron. Still a big bank though.

This can not be done with an ATM (debit) card where a pin is required. Those can only be used at POS (Point of Sale). On the other hand, if the card is a Visa Check or MasterMoney card with the respective logos, then you should have no problem.

But the Cirrus and Maestro both require PIN dont they? and Jeff says he can use his Cirrus card over the net, but how?

Was your card issued for ATM usage or was it authorized as a debit/checking card linked to your banking account for purchases?

If it has either the Visa or Mastercard logo, it should work just about anywhere online. I have a Visa Debit Card w/ the Interlink logo issued by Bank of America and a MasterCard Debit Card w/ the Cirrus logo issued by Bank One via ecount.com. I've had no problems with either of the two ranging from ordering pizza to paying for domains (dotster) to being billed by ureach.com.

2) I have a Mastercard Debit card with Maestro and Cirrus logos over it, it works fine for every offline purchase I attempted but never works on net.

My Visa Electron card has also an "Electron Use Only" written on it and the numbers are also not embossed. At the back side, "Valid Worldwide" is written.
