View Full Version : Don't you just love it?
sandanista 08-25-2004, 08:36 AM After losing a few customers to kiddie hosts offering unlimited everything for $5 per year my first customer has returned to me after just 3 days!
Don't you just love it when that happens?
Hopefully I'll be getting more customers back when their new host's "unlimited" server overloads.
Just out of curiosity...does anyone else suffer from losing customers to these kiddie hosts?

ezbnc 08-25-2004, 08:58 AM It happens sometimes and really nothing you can do for them. Sometimes it takes getting screwed over a few times before they realize you get what you pay for.

Run by a 14 year old :\
Nilomedia 08-26-2004, 11:38 AM I wonder If a host sells for $5, how could he collect profits to afford maintaining servers, rent fees, etc..
effusionx1 08-26-2004, 11:38 AM If he was an adult he'd know to make the site functionality first and then put it online!
liquidjoel 08-26-2004, 11:50 AM Bandwidth is so cheap these days that if a host has a good automated system setup with a control pannel, they can be very proffitable selling hosting for just $5 per month.

if they have no overhead and a lot of overselling is done.
Orc Webhosting 08-26-2004, 01:09 PM I'm not sure what your probs with calexmedia plans are, except for the last unlimited one they are anything but cheap-ish. <shrugs>
Jay Suds 08-26-2004, 01:11 PM You think $10 PER YEAR is good, fair rate for a hosting plan? That is 83 cents per month.
Orc Webhosting 08-26-2004, 01:19 PM Ouch, I automatically assumed all those prices are per MONTH... LOL my bad. Of course they are scam as yearly prices (the unlimited plan would be scam even as a monthly price).
Nilomedia 08-26-2004, 01:21 PM People understand that they get what they pay for.
Personally, If I'm a host owner, I wouldn't offer support services, 24h maintenance if my customer is paying 83 cents per month :D
Aerovive 08-26-2004, 01:42 PM I agree with a lot of you - these teenagers should not be running web hosting businesses. On the other hand, I myself was once one of these little kids about 6 or 7 years ago, (granted i didn't run a web hosting business) and by creating websites and exploring the internet I taught myself a majority of what I know about web design.
I'm not saying they should be trusted with your money or your time, just don't bash them to much cuz they will be running your world some day. :)
The internet is becoming a tricky place to know who to trust and who not, hopefully the best will shine through!

cdgcommerce 08-26-2004, 01:55 PM You get what you pay for - it is sometimes as simple as that.
My question is this - is a client that leaves you for a $10/year hosting account really the ideal client to have in the first place?
Over the long haul, every industry has its long term winners and those that don't stand the test of time.
The sheer costs involved - both server, network & support - to maintain a proper hosting service are simply not supported by accounts at the $10/year price point. It is only a matter of time until the client base attritions and the company disappears.

Anyone with more than a few customers has probably lost some to kiddie hosts, the question is - a customer who'll jump hosts to save a couple dollars, do you really want them? I understand leaving over bad service, downtime, etc, but I've seen people leave for these really stupid deals "Hi I can get 50 gigs of transfer and 2 gigs of space for $2.99 per month and with you I only get 300 megs of space and 4000 megs of transfer for $3.95" Then you look and they're using 100 megs of space and less than a gig of trnasfer per month and all you can do is shake your head as you cancel their account.
hiltonizer 08-26-2004, 05:20 PM hey.. i was 14 years old 6 years ago, offering hosting plans of my Plesk reseller account for $10 year... unlimited space and unlimited bandwidth... made good profit off it till the guy running the server decided to dissapear
all it did was teach me to never let anyone else run your server for you. especially if its your
VN-Ken 08-26-2004, 05:23 PM Yeah, I can't stand when it happens. Then once they make the switch to the 'cheaper' host, they want to post on WHT, talking about how they have bad support. Well... What do you expect? Your paying $5/mo for 10 GB Space, 100 Gb Transfer.

well there are lots of hosts offering FREE hosting!
i say GOOD FOR THEM!
i dont want cheap-*** clients anyways!
i dont want the hassle of someone who doesnt take their online business seriously enough to pay for it!
Khazun 08-27-2004, 02:42 AM Thankfully, I have never really lost a company, especially to a kiddie host.
I have only had 2 cancellations, and these were to the sites/clan dying.
