I'm looking to invest into building a company, that can save companies huge amounts of money on bandwidth and I have a few questions:

1:
Do I host each site on their own dedicated server?
Or do I buy one or two giant servers and host them all?

2:
I figure if I can buy the servers, I'm home free, or... Am I going to have to buy a phone company? What other MAJOR costs will I incurr?

It's a hard question to answer with so little details. I think for any decent response you would need to post more details on your business plan and what you are trying to achieve.

Buying a phone company isnt something that most people do every day and I am unsure why you would need to buy one and not just a large connection to the internet.

As to hosting each site on it's own dedicated server... it depents what they are paying for. Are they paying for shared hosting? or are they paying for their site to be on their own server. Bandwidth usage is only a part of the equation. You might have a site that doesnt use much bandwidth but causes strain on the server or you might have a site thats just HTML and can load pages all day with out making the server even realise.

1) Hire a competent, technology focused Business Manager ($120,000.00)
2) Hire a top level Network Engineer ($100,000.00)

After you drop close to a 1/4 of a million dollars on the salaries and benefits for the two people that can best assist you in the planning stages it should be a lot easier to come up with a viable business plan that you can take to your Accountant and Attorney for review...

Yeah um... if you need to ask those kind of questions, dont open a business, it'll just be another one of those dotcom startups that die.

Bla bla bla...
I once thought it would be cool to open a strip club:

I paid for a years lease,
I lost some money... well, a lot.
But I had a lot of fun and learned much. Now I know everyone in in biz.

I just want to do it so people don't have to deal with THIS CRAP (http://www.webhostingtalk.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=313158).

What you are trying to ask is "how do I start a web hosting company".

The first thing you need to do is research, research, research.

Search starting a website hosting company here and on google.

Find your self a decent system admin or find one that will outsource and consult for you and do the admin work if you can't.

Once you have these and have done your research you will have a better idea of what is involved and the costs.

As for the post you linked to, I'm very sorry to see that. That type of stuff should not happen.

All hosting companies and people are not like that person so you may want to search around for a different host. Read the reviews here and what other customers of the hosts say. Then find someone external from the host to do the design work, etc.. you want.

:roll2: Yeah, they should. But if they are contemplating it, better to get them to do the research and understand what they in for (hopefully) than leave them in the dar......

don't knock the guy. Why should he know that buying a phone company isn't the way forward ;) LOL

He's probably only 12 years old judging by the way he writes. Seems he has issues with his existing/previous host and the only real way he can think about dealing with it is to start his own "server company". I like the idea of buying a phone company, but what was that posting about strip clubs?

"Click" - thanks for making me laugh
