View Full Version : FTP programs you guys use to Upload sites etc...
alpha 01-07-2002, 02:33 AM Just wondering while I opened up FlashFXP for like the 40th time today...
What FTP program do YOU use?
I would've made this into a poll, but there are just too many FTPing programs out there!
I'm wondering if there's a good FTP program out there that can easily store FTP site information and lets you easily get on em without a hassel and without taking too much system resources (like can have 4+ of the program open without having it slow down the computer).
I'm guessing the following FTP programs will be freqently used: CuteFTP, FlashFXP, LeapFTP, BulletproofFTP - but any newly released FTP programs that I might not know about/try to use?
Thanks! :)
MarcD 01-07-2002, 02:38 AM i use cuteftp
i hate wsftp
i used both for a while and have found cute to be the fastest way for me to do things
im probably in ftp 1 hour or more probably more a day
priyadi 01-07-2002, 03:46 AM I don't use FTP to upload files, primarily because it is not secure, it transmit your password in clear text.
Personally I like rsync, it is secure (when used on top of ssh), it is efficient (it only uploads the differences when the file you are uploading is already exists).
rhartono 01-07-2002, 04:14 AM I use Smartftp. It's free and it is much better than any other ftp programs I have ever used. It got rave reviews at cnet too.
Manish 01-07-2002, 04:45 AM LeechFTP

Mike the newbie 01-07-2002, 09:45 AM I use cuteFTP at work, and smartftp here at home.
I've been using cuteFTP for about 2 years, and smartftp for about 2 months.
I wish I had known about smartftp two years ago. Smartftp is an excellent program.
While cuteFTP works well, it did install a snooping dll on my hard disk (it does that for the ads it displays). When I switched to the pay-for version, the dll was still there. I don't like software that snoops my PC.
There is nothing that I do in cuteFTP that I cannot do in smartftp. Given that smartftp is free, and cuteftp must be bought; it is an easy decision.

MikeF 01-07-2002, 10:09 AM Hi,
I use Leapftp and really like it. I wish however someone made an app like it, that would do secure server to server file transfer.
I use LeapFTP too, but I think I'm going to try SmartFTP. BTW, does anyone know if there is an SSH client for win32?
brently27 01-07-2002, 12:29 PM WS FTP pro here.
klisis 01-07-2002, 12:33 PM I used to use WS_FTP pro until a few weeks ago. I have used WS_FTP pro for years.
But now I use Cute FTP pro.
I like Cute FTP pro more now because,
1. It has a built-in editer.
2. It can keep the FTP connection alive as long as you want.
3. Better user-end interface ( for me, yeah).

PlanetDigita 01-07-2002, 12:40 PM Hello all,
With the latest versions of CuteFTP you can use SFTP instead of regular FTP.
This is the best way to have FTP with security in my opinion. Although the rsync option is some thing I will look into.
Does anyone know about rsync for windows (if there is a such thing)
Also while we are on the subject of updating sites.
Is there any program that will let you do cvs on windows? Or is there any thing that works similiar? Any help would be greatley appreciated.
Thanks,
ho247 01-07-2002, 12:41 PM I agree with rhartono, Smart FTP is the best FTP program around... it's got all the features you'll need, it's got a very nice looking interface and it's free too :D.
I used to use CuteFTP, but switched to Smart FTP, you guys and gals :) should try it.

I agree with you.
Also Cute FTP Pro allow Sftp and fxp.
DjPaj 01-07-2002, 04:59 PM LeapFTP and CuteFTP are my choices, I use mainly LeapFTP, but if I for some reason have a problem with Leap, I'll open up CuteFTP. They both work great for me.
I use LeechFTP, I think It is by far the best one I've used so far...:)
appletreats 01-07-2002, 06:46 PM I use 100% WSftp. Why? Because 1) it's nice and 2) I'm much too lazy to find another one. It crashes often, but that's something I gotta live with.

Check out http://www.chiark.greenend.org.uk/~sgtatham/putty/ for a free ssh terminal program,
and http://winscp.vse.cz/eng/ for a free sftp client
Rewdog 01-07-2002, 09:03 PM I'm a huge LeapFTP fan.
