View Full Version : Moving from a Plesk Server to a Cpanel/WHM Server

I'm switching from a dedicated account with Aplus.net with Plesk to a P2800 account with Cpanel/WHM at ThePlanet.com and if anyone can offer any help on this I'd appreciate it.

So, what I intend to do is copy all the information from the 15 existing accounts onto the new server manually, having set up my DNS configuration the same on the new server as on the old one. Then I go to my registrar and redefine the nameservers to point to the new server. Just change the IPs and such, then give it about a week or so before i take the old one down.

Am I on course? Am I missing anything here? Any suggestions or tips? I saw the tutorial on copying iptables will that work with my situation? Any help is appreciated.

Thanks....

In case you did not notice, The Planet offers plesk as well. Although you could have chosen cPanel/WHM for a reason. Anyway, good luck with the move :)

Copying other accounts manually from Plesk to WHM is fine, but why dont you configure your IP tables on the new server from scratch, rather than just copying them ..
Well its upto you ..)
Good Luck .!

This all works, but what about the program in WHM that copies files from other servers. It includes Plesk. Is there some reason that people don't use it? Is there a downside to having it do it automatically, or is it just faster to do it manually?

I just did the same thin but went from plesk to plesk. The new plesk7 (reloaded) comes with a migration manager that worked very well.

mlingo did you ever try the plesk migration feature for cpanel accounts? I never tried it but I heard it doesn't work

No I was new to all of this over the weekend when I moved from rackforce to rackspace. They upgraded my plesk and told me about the migration manager.

Thanks for the replies. I didn't realize that feature would copy from Plesk, I guess I assumed it was used for copying accounts between master/slave servers or some such situation. I'll give that a try. Thanks again for the suggestions.

As a follow up to this--in case anyone cares--the automatic transfer did not work. It was unable to get a list of accounts from the old server. My guess is that it's because it's Plesk 7 and that auto transfer feature only lists support for up to version 6.x. Oh well...

Mine was plesk 7 also. Your sure it uploaded the migration manager onto the old server? When doing this it took a while.

I have and last I knew the cPanel/WHM migration manager it will not work with Plesk 7.

The Plesk 7.1 Migration manager on the other hand will grab cPanel and Plesk accounts.

Yeah, it clearly indicated that it was ready, but found no accounts.

I've just begun the manual process and am experiencing, as vmircea put it, pain. Anyone have any magic tricks? Moving databases?

You are in for a headache any way you do it. cPanel does not name databases or db usernames the same.

This means every customer using a database is going to have to update there config files.

You would have been better off to stay with plesk for current customers and bring up a seperate cPanel server.
