View Full Version : Help me find my next Digi-Cam!!!
Chicken 11-11-2000, 01:20 PM (Note: Reposted from another thread)
I let my buddy borrow my digi-cam, and of course it was stolen at the club... so I'm in the market for a new one. I'm cheap though, and don't want to spend $500 ($300-$400 range sounds better). If you've bought one for under $400 that you love so much you must post and tell Chicken about it, then by all means, tell tell. I really want to keep it in the $300-$400 range if possible...
My old digi-cam was an Olympus D220-L and I loved it. Only 640x480, no zoom, but it took great pictures. There is a similar Olympus for sale now (can't quite remember the code #), for $300 as well. Better res., and zoom, priced around $300.
I'm afraid I'll pass up something better only because I'll go with what I know.
gthorley 11-11-2000, 04:59 PM Why not check out info here and leave a msg

and picture quality is excellant.

echoweb 11-11-2000, 05:28 PM Olympus 460z is a GREAT camera. You can get it at PCWonders.com for only $318...
Boris
Chicken 11-11-2000, 05:53 PM Hmm, well the D460Z is listed at pcwonders for $399, but that still isn't bad!
I was looking at the D360L which has 1280 x 960 and is listed there for $256 which is a great price. I think the D460Z has better resolution than what was posted since it is a 2.11 megapixel (now that I look at both side by side). I am a sucker for that mini-movie mode... though I hate quicktime as a format.
------
Holy goodness... confusion! Seems on pcwonders, the price, and features have just changed for this camera! No mini-movie, and now just $358
I like what they had better! But I guess it was a typo?

echoweb 11-11-2000, 07:34 PM You probably were looking at 490Z not 460Z. Check out: http://pcwonders.com/technote.asp?menu=1&txtProductkey=199069
I bought the same camera a month ago (and dropped it 2 times the same day :() for $318.xx
360L is ok but it lacks many important features (zoom - only offers 2x digital) and it doesn't look as cool as the next version :)
Chicken 11-11-2000, 09:41 PM Yes, I was getting ythe 460 and the 490 mixed up. Either seems nice, and it seems the difference is only about $50-ish. Hmmm...
echoweb 11-11-2000, 10:01 PM You can record videos with the 490Z :)
Make sure to buy at least 32MB card with the camera
Boris
gthorley 11-11-2000, 11:24 PM Don't buy it for the videos. I bought the 490z and while the videos are a bit of a novelty there is no sound and the maximum length is 15 sec. If you can get it for just $50. more than the 460 it is a good deal as you get the higher resolution. You can also hook it up as a web cam and flash yourself to the world.
Keep in mind you will need more smart cards for storage a USB smart reader and back up Nimh batteries with a charger.
These will run you about another $100.
You can see some test picture I have done here

OOooo, that is another thing I wanted to get... hmmm. So far this is where I am heading. Any other comparable brands? I had Smart Media cards with the other one (so I was looking specifically for a Smart Media camera), but those were in the camera case pouch, so I am back to ground zero there.
Looking for options to the D480Z at this point. A search for digi-cams in the $250-$500 range came up with 52 models, ughhh. Nikons, Kodaks, etc...
Canon A5 or A50 users?

etLux 11-13-2000, 12:38 PM Can chickens actually flash?
I mean, how do you do that, with all the feathers in the way?
And what exactly is it you show when you flash?
I use to raise chickens, and I don't think there is really anything to show, atleast I never saw anything.
etLux 11-13-2000, 06:32 PM With all due respect to our own Chicken, the genitalia of fowl are, uh, well... rather inconsequential.
sheepdip 11-15-2000, 12:28 PM OK EtLux,
That was easy for you to say, but try telling that to "those who wear them".
In Chicken's honor, I've used one of YOUR applets (Yak, which can be had by all for FREE, btw) to show a really spirited chicken for the holidays.
It would be appreciated if you just try to think in the sprit of the holidays, and don't get too critical of the artwork. View it, if you dare:

Now I'm ready for the holidays. How about you Chicken?

DynastyHost 11-15-2000, 12:34 PM I will have my FuJifilm MX2900 in 2 days!! :)
I got it for $400
etLux 11-15-2000, 12:41 PM Wow... where'd you get that shot of Chicken?
Looks just like him around the nose, er, beak...
http://www.sheepdip.net/my_chicken/yak_chicken.htm
sheepdip 11-15-2000, 01:03 PM The photo of Chicken came from my Sony DSC70. I know you're trying to stay cheep,cheep,cheep...but this is the second Sony I've owned and I do love it. (That shot of Chicken is really not a testament to the quality it affords). The prices are dropping steadily and CDW representatives can always cut you a deal (like minus $100 from their ad prices. Ask for Wiley Weiskopf.)
It's a 3 MPixel has good mpeg video and sound, 6x zoom (Carl-Zeiss lens, which really starts to matter at high resolutions or optical zooming) and can even record in un-compressd TIFF format. The batteries are incredible - last a long, long time and are re-chargeable in the camera. Great built in flash! No burning out the images at close range. The proprietary "Memory Stick" storage is also very nice - about the size of half a stick of Wrigley's gum - and 64 Mb. I'm hoping they'll produce an even larger capacity stick, but I guess if I lost a 120 Mb stick, I'd be sadder than if I lost a 64 MB stick. It's USB-ready and no card-reader is needed. I've had several digi-cams and it's probably what you "get used to", but while I like the Olympus models, I am really happy with my Sony. I know the reviews are never glowing - or at least the reviewers never seem to choose to review Sony cameras - but it's my pick. (Who pays for those reviews anyway???) Compact size and really rugged. I should know...I live on farm and have dropped cameras from tractors and horseback. (Uhhh. I probably shouldn't have disclosed such personal information...)
Another of my famous $.02 opinions. I think Chicken looks stunning with antlers, don't you?
sheepdip
etLux 11-15-2000, 01:11 PM Though Chicken is mysteriously silent on this, I'd agree, yes, he does indeed look stunning with antlers.
I suspect he's secretly had them all along; but concealed them, to prevent antler-envy amongst the general population of other barnyard fowl.
sheepdip 11-15-2000, 01:33 PM And now the whole world will be breathless with anticipation, waiting for Chicken to flash us with his previously hidden and now revealed, "appendages". To heck with this presidential super-bowl, baloney.
Sorry, Chicken if I got a scoop on your "show". We all knew there was a perfectly good reason for you to flash the world. Really. Honest. We did.
Where the heck *is* Chicken, anyway? Did someone say fricassee?
sheepdip
Chicken is currently locked in discussions with Ralph Nader in Palm Beach about the hand-counting of votes to determine the final outcome of the election... My lips are otherwise sealed.
etLux 11-15-2000, 05:57 PM I still believe Chicken has a chance to win this thing, regardless of his fowl genitalia.
Chicken 11-15-2000, 07:47 PM Uhhhhhhh, just got back from a hard day at the office (fighting off the lil' midgets). Love the chicken and antlers (should be a new animal!).
The guy who lost my digi-cam wanted to go 'in' on another one- BAH! I told him to gimme the money and that he'd never see it! Still haven't decided. Gonna look at that fuji later this week.
Ohhh, and I also fried the USB ports (on the mother board) with my currently disabled CD writer. I doubt they work now, but I also don't have anthing USB to test it either. The camera needs to have serial connectivity.
I want to get a new computer too, so it might be an either or thing for now :(
etLux 11-15-2000, 08:07 PM With any luck, Chicken, you can still win the presidential election.
I think you get free hardware with that...
