View Full Version : What is the best way to grab a domain about to expire?

A domain I want is about to expire in the next couple of weeks.

The registrar is

Registrar: NAMESDIRECT

Some registrars let them go immediately, others play games and hold them for a while.

Assuming the owner does not renew, what's the best method, service, etc. to grab it. I don't mind paying a fee if someone can actually grab it for me.

I'm using snapnames for notification, but I believe there's others that will register it when it becomes available for a $75 fee or something.

Got links?

Where is this "Club Drop" feature?

Okay, more specifically,

What's a service that I pay for only if they grab the domain for me.

I'd rather pay $75 if they get it, and zero if I get nothing.

I think there used to be a service like this.

Maybe contact WHT member acts837 on his website at www.namezoom.net for a $8.95 account where he rebates you bate $1.00 (there is usually a minimum $100.00 deposit necessary to get your account going). But to answer your questions about Club Drop look here: http://www.enom.com/help/faq_clubdrop.asp

Basically it works like you want... you bid a certain amount as the Club Drop "premium" (minimum $10.00) that you will pay for them to grab the domain and then you have to also pay whatever your normal price is for registration.

Pool works like that too, only the minimum you will pay there is $60.00 if they grab the domain. If others are also interested, then they have a new two-step auction process that will surely raise the bid.

Snapnames has just gone to this new auction method where you only pay if they get the name... I haven't tried it yet.

NameWinner also has a modified auction method where the minimum bid is $40.00 now (used to be only $8.75... ah the good old days ;) ).

GoDaddy is one where you pay up front $18.95 I believe is retail. But they only accept one backorder per domain, so you don't have to fool with a higher auction price. If GoDaddy doesn't get it, then you can exchange it for other domains until they get one. GoDaddy isn't the best, but I think it's a pretty good value if you are constantly trying to grab domains.

Why don't you check them out and do some searching here on WHT. Sounds to me, you're making me do all your work... :D

Concur with Bashar. eNom has been doing some good things (probably due to Chris) with the drops. Right now snapnames is still trying to regroup because they have down right been horrible the past six months.

yeah chris did great work indeed :)

i dont think snapnames has a chance nowadays, maybe redesign their software structure?

eNom just got about 12 different registrars that pick up names exclusively for them which means their percentage of names picked up just went a hell of a lot higher!

Okay, can some please give me the step-by-step process on how to do this with Enom?

1) Link

2) Process

3) Procedure

4) Cost

etc.

Click on the "drops and auctions" tab in your enom account, and that takes you the page to see the drop lists. Click on a day and dowload the list. Find one or more that you like, and add them to your list for that day.

If no one else puts that or those domains in their list, you get them (usually) if others do, then it goes into an auction.

The cost is your usual domain price + the amount that you bid.

So it appears I need to wait until AFTER the expiration date?

The domain expires on September 5th, and it does not look like the owner is going to re-new.

So, what you're telling me is that this must appear in the "drop-list" first?

Correct?

Yeah, if the domain is at enom then it will appear in the drop list aprox 82 days after expiration. If its somewhere else, find out about their expiration and redemption time frames - that will let you know when it will appear in the drop list.

The domain is not at enom

The domain, as indicated in the initial post, is registered through namesdirect.

If the domain expires on September 5, 2004, I want to register is on Sept 5th, Sept 6th, or immediately when it's available.Originally posted by HostCheap.us.com

beset way is to contact them and ask. Most registrars are all different in their time periods.

For general info: www.snapnames.com/deleteprocess.html

After the domain goes into redemption period, the Freewho checker is usually pretty accurate as to when it will be dropped (released): http://freewho.com/checker/index.php

Can I register a domain that has already expired? (http://customercare.custhelp.com/cgi-bin/customercare.cfg/php/enduser/std_adp.php?p_sid=y5lYAAjh&p_lva=&p_faqid=304&p_created=1036472351&p_sp=cF9zcmNoPTEmcF9ncmlkc29ydD0mcF9yb3dfY250PTEyJnBfc2VhcmNoX3RleHQ9ZXhwaXJpbmcgZG9tYWlucyZwX3NlYXJjaF90eXBlPTMmcF9wcm9kX2x2bDE9fmFueX4mcF9wYWdlPTE*&p_li=)

addresses the matter as it applies to namesdirect.

It appears that they recommend Namewinner.com as it's their partner. If you are watching a domain to register it when it becomes available, please check out our partner Namewinner.com. There you can bid on domain that are about to become publicly available. If yours is the winning bid, we will watch for the registry to drop the domain and try to snatch it up for you almost immediately. This greatly increases your chances of being able to get the domain you want. Please see Namewinner.com for details. So, how does this sound for a plan:

1) Do nothing before Sept 5th (the expiration date)

2) Wait about 30 days after the expiration date to see if the owner re-claims it.'

3) After about 30 days, put in a bid with Namewinner.com

How does that sound for a plan? Does that seem like the most feasible option?

sounds good, but you may not want to wait that long - as some one else may pick it up during that time period. Ask them if there is a grace period on the domain, if not, then its only redemption which is 45 days plus a 5-7 day pending delete

I assume this is the time that I move forward with Namewinner.com, which brings me to this question (http://www.webhostingtalk.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=312012).

I would recomend eNoms club drop. They get more names then any other service due to the mods they made lately :)

I would find out exactly how long by contacting the current registrar. That will tell you almost exactly when the domain will be "dropped" (within a few days) and then you can start checking at that time.

Yes, registrar-level grace periods vary (from 0 - 44 days), but RGP (Redemption Grace Period) lasts EXACTLY 30 calendar days, with an extra 5-6 days queueing for deletion at the registry level.
