View Full Version : Dedicated slower than shared!?

Hi,

For the last 2 years I've had my site hosted on a shared server and now that it's a bit more successful and well-visited I decided to pay more and move over to a dedicated server with FDC Servers.

I haven't yet changed over the nameservers to point to the new site but will that affect the speed, because on initial results it's about 3x slower than the shared account.

I'd love any feedback from anyone who wants to compare the two sites:

216.17.100.152 (shared account)
66.90.73.230 (dedicated account)

Will the speed improve when I change over the nameservers? Also, in WHM I get a message saying a hostname A entry is missing - will this affect the speed also?

Thanks,

- Andy.

sounds like the server is not set up right. I would suggest talking to the support department at your dedicated host. They will be able to help as we may not.

Also do a SEARCH on FDC Servers, know there are some posts for them.

the problem is most likely the fact that you have chosen fdc they are known for rather poor network performance. while your shared was hosted on a machine at phatservers which has a much better reputation.

when you mean slower you mean in regards to loading time right? ask your new dedicated server provider what kind of a pipe they give you, it's probably either 10 or 100mbs, but never hurts to ask, also you need to make sure its setup, i.e. apache is compiled all right with the proper flags, and if you compile your own kernel you can probably speed it up some more too...

I suggest you get server admin and issues will be resolved.
I guess you have misconfigured it...

Many shared hosting providers offer better performance than you can expect from a dedicated server regardless of who it is from, unless you have the money to invest on big-dog hardware and software. For php optimization, some hosts install Zend optimizer (software). Here's a nifty piece of $20,000 hardware that goes in front of a server farm:

Now, about these server farms. Each server is functioning only as a webserver, and not handling domain name resolution, email or other services allowing the machine to be optimized for http. By using network-attached storage and large caches on HD arrays, well there's another performance benefit you just don't get with a dedicated server. Not to mention clustering and other techniques.

While it may not apply to AndyGroom's situation, my point is that assuming a dedicated server must be faster than shared, well you know what they say -- never assume, it makes an *** out of u and me.
