Difficult question to answer without putting down other hosts. Something which I always try to avoid.
If you read this advertising forum you will notice several new webhosting companies each week. All of them without doubt with the best intentions. Unfortunatly not always with the best of preparation and definatly not always focused on contingency.
How can I stay in business while many others can't? Well, for starters my guess is that most hosts do not go out of business because of financial problems. It is just not what they expected. It is too much work. The customers complain too much. They find another "hobby". Often right before the end you will see them offering 50, 60, 70% off on their plans in a last attempt to get the customers they thought would flock to them as soon as they opened up shop.
My (personal) opinion has always been that if you offer 50% off you are either:
a) always charging 50% too much or
b) desperate
I've seen people on these forums who are about to start up a new hosting company ASK what would be a good price for their hosting plans.
You don't ask. You calculate. You calculate your cost per server, the number of accounts you can put on a server and add a % for your profit (extremely simplified example).
If your calculations get you a result of $ 48.- per month for 1 GB of datatransfer then you need to either look where you can cut cost or you just have to face the fact that you cannot compete. If you cannot compete, you do not start a company.
Once you have your ideal (hosting with reasonable profit margin) price STICK WITH IT. It is so tempting to continue to lower it to be able to compete with other companies. There will always be those that go under your price. (You know who you are Dixiesys ;) )
It is a trap you must be carefull not to fall into. Since your monthly cost will not get any lower, the only thing you'll cut away is your profit margin. A profit margin you not only need to buy you some food, but also the profit margin that you will need in 2 years time to buy that newer, faster server.
But I am sidetracking (I could go on for hours on the subject).
I am 31 years old. I have invested over $ 5000.- in this company during the last 6 months. Early december I passed the magical line which means I now get a steady stream of new customers even if I don't advertise just because word of mouth.
I know customer service. I know responsibility. I knew the moment I stepped into this boat I had to sail it till the end.
I have a business plan and I am sticking to it. I don't take on any site as long as they pay. I say no to customers whose site have a negative impact on the performance of the company. I have money, I have time, I have the motivation and in 3 years time Wbws will be in the same league as HR.
Hmm, when I read that last part back it looked a bit presumptious and bloated. I'll leave it in anyway because that is what I firmly believe in.

It was a rude awakening.
This time around I have two other guys alongwith me, and everything has been planned/set up before hand :)

I didn't think any hosting company would really want to host my site--all it is is a fansite with pictures and quotes and articles and what not...it's not a business....I don't get an overwhelming number of visitors. But Martin Pelgrim said his company would gladly host my site and he was very prompt with his email reply and the customer service is excellent. Granted, I've only been signed up for a little less than a month, but I'm very impressed so far. The uptime has been great, I've been able to access my site faster than before, and it's easy to use. The price is great for what they offer. I had been looking months for somewhere to put my site, and I'm really glad I chose WBWS. I would definitely recommend for people looking for a host to check them out. Thanks, Martin.

I am now about two months with them and I had 100% uptime. Support is very good.
If you want good hosting choose them.
P.S. I don't work for them, too.
