mkaufman 01-05-2002, 08:19 PM Two planes crashed..
one into a bank of america building in Tampa, Florida
and one in Boulder, Colorado..
cnn.com and msnbc.com has information
NetXL 01-05-2002, 08:19 PM :(
Rewdog 01-05-2002, 08:21 PM wow, you are quick!
Doesn't look devistating in tampa, no one was hurt thank god.
NetXL 01-05-2002, 08:22 PM The pilot died though?
That's still awful.
I can't find the second one though..
thewitt 01-05-2002, 08:24 PM Small planes crash all the time in this country, particulary those flown by student pilots. Sounds pretty innocent to me. Sad that the 15 year old pilot lost his life, but nothing to panic about.

Not terrorist? That's good. But too bad... :(

Um..yeah real sad - he tried it..I mean how could you HIT a 50 floor TOWER by mistake?
mkaufman 01-05-2002, 08:33 PM I heard a rumour that another plane hit a parking lot in CA
But he was a 15 year old student pilot who had no permission to fly the aircraft.

I'd hardly call it proof at this time.
He might have been trying to buzz the building where his girlfriend worked...

Yup..I can't understand why they didn't. They have jets..helicopters - all faster then any Cessna

They probably decided that shooting him down would be more dangerous than anything he could do by himself. A Cessna isn't exactly going to take down an office tower -- it isn't likely to do anything other than get its pilot killed -- but if you shot it down over the middle of a city you'd have flaming debris raining down on the people below.
If you see a lunatic wielding a knife running through a crowd of people, you're not going to open fire with machine guns, are you?

Depends... are you LAPD, or not? :D Here they like to do that sort of thing, yikes...
Aloha
bummer that planes go down ;(
but how many car crashes were there compared to planes I am tired of people freaking out over plane crashes as someone else said that little planes crash regular like
well at least when they go down they generally take out themselves only and not others like cars (still sad though) but it is so funny that people are so quick to jump on planes crashing
still safest form of travel !!!
anyway done ranting ;)
back to Maui life ahhhhhh
mkaufman 01-06-2002, 08:52 AM The thing I can't understand .. is that you can be 14 years old and start to learn to fly - solo at 15

As I read it, he wasn't *supposed* to be flying solo.

Indeed - in his case. However, at least until a little while ago, there were no age restrictions whatsoever on non-commercial pilots licenses. Which means there were kids flying planes by themselves legally before they could even drive a car. I'm not sure if this is still the case, but I wouldn't be surprised.

I'm not sure this is true. I believe you have to be 16 to fly solo. This was the case when I took flying lessons in the 70's, and I don't believe it was every changed.
In recent years, the cross country record was set by a 14 year old pilot, however his instructor was in the plane with him at all times. The kid did the flying, but he was not allowed to fly alone in the airplane.

CRego3D 01-07-2002, 12:26 AM I passed the AMEX building this morning (Tampa) .. can see the hole in the bulding, amazing nobody else got hurt
rockergrrl 01-07-2002, 12:31 AM The kid that crashed the plane in Tampa did it on purpose. They found a letter in the kid's pocket saying that he was all for the Sept 11 attacks and that he was pro-Osama bin Laden.
The kid was messed up. They said he was a loner. And more likely wasn't there to kill anyone -- but to bring more awareness, and to kill himself.
That was just on the news just now (I'm live in Sarasota -- 45min drive south of Tampa).
The scary part of it all, my mom works in the law offices 2 floors below where the plane crashed on the 26th floor (the plane crashed in the 28/29 floors).
There was someone on the 28th floor (in that law office there) when it happened -- luckily on the other side of the office space. She was there with her husband and they were the ones that called 911. Luckily as well, it was Saturday evening -- and no one was there working really.
The reason why there were military helicopters around him right before he crashed, is because it took off from St. Petersburg airport (across Tampa Bay), and flew in directly over McDill Air Force Base -- which is a new fly zone -- and right into downtown Tampa.
That's my 2 cents into the whole thing...
Now I'm off to bed.
