Can hardware raid be added to an existing machine without losing any data? Hardware raid, not software. I have a few supermicro servers I would like to add hardware raid to so I can have a mirror of the main disk incase it fails. And could anyone recomend a raid card? My systems run freebsd if that has anything to do with the card chosen.

I would look for a promise raid controller. I know little to nothing about hardware RAID and have never set it up from scratch, but Promise controller cards are fairly well known for quality. Hope this helps.

You should be able to do RAID 1 without a problem but it will depend on the card.
