You have unlimited cash, and the power to host your server wherever you may wish. :D

Leaving the machine type and specs out, where would you host your dedicated server?

I guess what I am trying to ask here is - Ignoring the issue of pricing, which host has the best facilities, and the most competent staff - Which host would you trust your dedicated server with?

If I have unlimited cash I would get multiple T3/DS3/OC/whatever lines, and host the server in my house :)

mmmmmmmmm, OC3 to my house, that's sweet :)

Well, not THAT unlimited :D lol.
Seriously now, in terms of reliability, connectivity etc. Which company would be the best choice (regardless of price)?

I can't afford an OC-3... yet

If I had funds to burn I would go to Rackspace.com based on their impeccable reputation.

same, rackspace.com

or maybe even purchase a colo cage at like MAE-EAST or QWEST...but we are talking $100,000's of dollars + you would need your own support staff if you did that, but it would sure be powerful.

Rackspace have dropped their prices considerably. Their lower end servers are now on par with Dialtone.

No real reason to choose Dialtone over Rackspace anymore.

Rackspace will be next choice of server.

True...Rackspace has dropped their prices on select servers...but at the same time dialtone is beginning to offer some very good upper end services. We have servers w/ both and have been very pleased w/ the services offered by both.

As a matter of personality, I like dialtone tech support team but they do ask you to get your hands dirty. DT also offers a unique custom interface which works well for us in certain circumstances.

What I mean to say here is that there are still good reasons to pick dialtone ;)

I have to agree with rackspace.

a tier one provider. Maybe UUnet, Ardent, or Verio. Preferably UUnet or Ardent as both have great connectivity/support.

This is actually realistic, as long as you use enough bandwidth. (Verio has been known to give rates as low as $125/MBPS to people who get 300 MBPS and sigh a prepayment agreement, Ardent is even cheaper.)

Having my own data center would be fun/great, but it's really a waste of cash unless you want to colo large servers. (size, now powerfull)

formerlly CAIS, they have been chapter 11 for a couple months now, but are providing great service! I also have good enough information to trust their reliability, as I have reviewed what they are doing (getting rid of their expensive buisnesses like DSL). Their network runs at 7% capacity, and their support is great. They're a tier one provider, too. I can get good deals from them for high amounts of bandwidth, but they don't really do the 1 MBPS thing I think. They pretty much let their clients resell the bandwidth.

You can get ardent prices as low as $70/MBPS, which is not bad at all :)

If you want some ardent bandwidth just send me an email/pm, and I'll try and hook up some connections with people there.

Well, $70/MBPS is great. How much is the minimum to get that price? I need a backup plan just incase Cogent rolls overs.

From Ardent, I have no idea... I have a friend who buys really high bandwidth there so I buy from him.

From my friend: 50 MBPS would probably do it, although I'm guessing that he'd only offer it to you if you had 100 MBPS unless he was happy that day :)

Cogent = tier three, and very unreliable.
Ardent = tier one, and becomming better every day.

I don't have any problems buying 100Mbps for $70/Mbps. Just sounds too good to be true. AT&T, Sprint and UUnet won't even sell it for that much and they are the biggest.

Revelation

It isn't :) The person you would be buying from colocates around 400-500 MBPS there, and has a strategic partnership with Ardent. :D

Rumer:

Ardent also has a almost completely fiber-optical network, and from what I have read new technoligy has come out that multiplies the amount of bandwidth you get from that my 124. Cogent is one of the few other providers who has a fiber-optic network, but they aren't tier one or reliable.

You're problably talking about xWDM .. Multiplexing several wave lengths in the same fiber (eg: X #'s of OC-Y in the same fiber).

I heard that the new fiber networks can have the same capacity of 64 OC-12 lines or more. Meaning that they could possibly transfer over 9900 gigs of bandwidth per second on one line. This may just be myth, but that was what the guy at cogent was telling me.

I would go with inflow. That 100% uptime SLA is very attractive as are their connections and equipment.

Cool. Now, the real question is, when can I get that installed at my house?? :D

Ummm... I hosted with them, for the first server we ever had. It got hacked one day (luckily I had put a second mirror drive in) and the mirror drive was ok. It should have taken them 2 days to get it back up..TOPS.. The whole ordeal took over a week and we lost like 1/4 our customers.

Just thought I would throw that in there. Another thing to remember when picking a host like this is....remember Alabanza? Everyone would recommend them...they were a little higher...but so what, it was great...then the bottom dropped out of that boat.

a tier one provider. Maybe UUnet, Ardent, or Verio. Preferably UUnet or Ardent as both have great connectivity/support.

Problem with a tier one is that is all you get. So if UUNET goes down...you go down. Most teir 1's are cocky and figure they will never go down so they don't get backups. I mean, it's the competition. Again, look at Verio. I'm sure if you talk to Ventures Online, they aren't to happy with Verio now.

Another TIP...don't look and say...oooo OC192 They must be good. For all you know, the got a DS-3 out of that OC192 pipe and it is at 75% usage. Be vewy caweful.

While I'm a provider and don't want to say this...You simply are not safe with anybody these days....

MikeA makes a good point, and offers one of the only partially negative rackspace remarks I have seen in the forums ;)
