Hi,
I started a domain transfer a couple of days ago, and I can't get to my site any more. Both the browser and tracert cannot resolve the domain name, but it seems some people can get through.
Is it normal for the domain name to become unknown to my DNS? I would've thought it would retain the old settings.
Thanks.

What domain is it? If you provide the domain I can take a look at it and see why it's not working.
A registrar transfer shouldn't affect DNS.

teagames.com is currently at enom (registrar) resold through namecheap.
The dns servers are ns1 and ns2.teagames.com
The nameservers are correctly registered.
The domain name is resolving ok
zeus# host teagames.com
teagames.com has address 67.43.10.158
teagames.com mail is handled (pri=0) by teagames.com
zeus#
The website is loading ok
So what is the problem?

By the way, I just checked the DNS response for each one of your nameservers and everything seems ok. Maybe it's something on your end.

I get a 'cannot find server' error when I try on the browser. Also ping and tracert cannot resolve the name.

Are you sure you are not blocking yourself on your server? (firewall/filters).
It could also be a failed DNS query stored in your/your provider's cache.

I'd guess it's my DNS - do they take long to update themselves?

It depends on your provider, your DNS (server) is working ok.
Also you can check the TTL and expiration values on your zone files (in your server) to see how long it will take for your provider's DNS to "re-query" or "update the cache".

You're welcome and you can always try www.traceroute.org and try to trace to your domain from different locations. If all of them are able to reach your server then everything is ok.

dnsstuff.com dnsreport.com checkdns.net are also good sites to check dns related issues.
and when transfering domains there isn't any downtime involved JFYI
