View Full Version : What's the gender ratio on the forums?

Like what it says - how many guys and gals do we have around here? I don't seem to see more than 5 of us ladies hanging about here. Of course, it could be because of the fact that we have gender-neutral names such as mine :stickout

Okay, take a poll, people - let's see if this industry is really that male-dominated :D

Gender-neutral indeed.

In Latin, the suffix "-um" denotes the neuter. In fact, the suffixes "-um, -i, -o, -um, -o" are all neuter. For example, all of these names would leave one wondering about your gender:
avium
avii
avio
avium
avio

Now, if you had wanted the "avi-" prefix with a female suffix to reflect your gender, you could've picked "-a, -ae, -ae, -am, -a". That is:
avia
aviae
aviae
aviam
avia

It would have been indicative of your gender had you used those names.

Now names you would want to stay away from, unless you wanted to show your masculine side, would be those with the suffixes '-us, -i, -o, -um, -o". Of course, these suffixes correspond with the masculine gender. The names would be:
avius
avii
avio
avium
avio.

Class dismissed.

* salutes aragon *

Very impressive, but then again, it was part of a latin word that I took it out from, or more specifically, out of a plant. I don't want to know if there really is the word avium, what it's meaning might be.

Come on - more votes? :)

Woe, that's quite a number of ladies we have here - I was thinking that there could be no more than 10 of us!

Anymore out there? Gents, let's do the poll too so we can get an accurate result, okay? ;)

Let's modify the poll -

Who is female, single, looking, and near South Dakota?

To respond to poll, please email adam@getwebspace.com

Thank you for your support.

Female here... of course you could tell by the username (I'm not of those strange men that use female usernames)...

---
I took Latin for all 4 years in high school ("A" average). I've even been to Italy.. ;)

Latin is easy... I've read all the great Latin writers.

Latin is easy... OK, OK, do I always have to explain the jokes? It's not that Latin is really confusing, it's that Aragon's "lesson" was; because it included "-um" as both masculine and neuter, and in contradiction named "avium" as an example of each.

And that I always thought of "-um" as a noun suffix as neither indicating masculine or neuter, but diminutive. But I could be wrong, since I hardly ever speak Latin -- I don't get to Latin America as much as I used to, these days.

Let's get back on the topic, people...

However did my username become a topic of debate?

-um is in the nominative case for neuter (as well as accusative, but lets not worry about that right now.)

-um for masculine is purely accusative.

Since "avium" is using it as her name, it would be in the nominative case. Avius would be the masculine counterpart and Avia would be feminine. Now had we used a sentence, the cases would be changed. But that's too much for now. :stickout

Clear things up for you JayC?

Back when I was holidaying in Japan 4 years back, they were showing GT on TV. There was only one problem - the anime was SUPER DRAGGY! I mean, come on - I stayed there for 3 weeks, and for the entire time, at the same time each week, I only see this golden monkey bursting out of a building and roaring and nothing else happens... :stickout

Oh wait - we are off topic here. So, what's the gender ratio? :)

What do you want, people to answer the poll and post "I have answered" -- or post what their answer was -- or not post at all? There needs to be some conversation in the thread, and a conversation on topic, the stated topic being "what's the gender ratio...?" would only be:

Currently it appears that 76.56% of the forum users are male. But with only 64 respondants to this very unscientific survey, the margin of error is very high and the confidence level of the poll quite low.
