Okay, just tonight I signed up for the Platinum plan at GearHost.net (http://www.gearhost.net/) and I must say, so far service and support have been amazing. Excellent server speeds, amazingly quick response time (two and a half hours on a Friday night) and instant account activation (that actually works!!).

I have just two problems with them so far;

Number 1: iControl.
Whenever I ask support (by e-mail or phone), I am told it will be done 'soon', or it's 'nearly' finished. I want a definete release date, I dislike having to use e-mail to get sub-domains and MySQL databases created. I understand that not all deadlines can be met, but it's now January 5th and all over iControl it says it will be finished by January 1st. At least change that to 'in January' or 'in 2002' or something that's vaguely true. I am also having some problems with permissions, but that is probably due to the fact that for the last two years I have hosted exclusively on *Nix and *BSD based servers.

Number 2: Customer Support on the website.
Whilst customer support via e-mail is extremely quick, the knowledge base and other customer support pages on your website are, well, they aren't there!! What's the deal with this? About 40% of the knowledge base links I tried to access were unavailable (I liked the error message though [you'll understand what I mean when you get it]).

I was just wondering, are their any other GearHost.net customers around who have had experiences as good as mine? Or was mine just a fluke? I say experiences as 'good' as mine, and I mean it. This has been a 100% flawless, extremely quick and incredibly easy account setup. It took about 3 minutes from starting Step 1 of the signup process to when I got the Welcome e-mail.

So, what are your experiences with GearHost? I am hoping Ryan shows up in this thread and answers any questions that may be put forward to him.

No, I do not work for GearHost. I have no financial interest in them, I am purely a very satisfied customer that wants to know if he is the only satisfied customer, or have their been others?

If you are satisfied... why do you complain on WHT?

Contact them directly. We did not sign up with this host, so we don't need to know when their control panel starts working

I guess Gear host is the flavor of the month. I think there needs to be an award for this. Something like "Flavor of the Month Club award winner" Every month, out of no where, a new host is *introduced* to WHT.

Judging by the looks and the last e-mail from GearHost, I'm pretty sure iControl will be done soon. Give it a little time. As I quoted in my previous post, no good programmer(s) meet a deadline.

By the way addaction, I wouldn't take his comments as complaining... it's just stating his opinion along with truthful facts. If only everyone could do that. Run a search on GearHost here and you'll see that I did the same.

You have any idea what version of PHP GearHost are using?
And if they provide mySQL (Without additional fees), daily backups?... :)

Gorl, they provide 4 MySQL databases free of charge, however at the moment you have to get them created by e-mailing support. You can view their phpinfo(); at http://pixel26.gearhost.net/phpinfo.php (they are using PHP4.0.6). As far as I know, they do not offer daily backups.

addaction, I amn't complaining. I was just stating the facts of what happened to me along with my opinion of the company, and I was asking for others experiences and opinions with them.

Would it not be smarter to ask first and then possibly sign up? ;)

addaction, yeah .. probably. But it's only $15 per month so I figured I'd give them a try for a month at least.

I guess we are the flavor of the month ;).

Pixel26, I totally understand you wanting a release date on iControl. The fact remains that iControl is up and working, we almost ;). A final release date will never be issued since it will always be developed and additional features are added each week. Now if your looking for a particular release date on a feature let me know.

In regards to the gearhost.com site that is getting revamped this week, no more broken likes to tech support issues, etc. plus a new upgraded ticket system, custom built of course ;).

Hope that helps clear up a little.

RyanK, well .. yes, I am very impressed with your service so far. I came to learn of you because of youtaking over all of the 'wantsomegetsome' accounts, my friend got transferred in that mess and he has been most impressed except for the problems with his UBB (Perl) and permissions on the Windows servers (and the fact that iControl is not very co-operative). Specifically, I wanted to know when the DNS > Domains section of iControl would be fully operational but I would also like to know of some sort of date when all the 'finished on January 1st 2002' message will be replaced by something that does something. :) Also, I would like some sort of web based MySQL database deletion / creation, maybe you could modify phpMyAdmin to meet your needs?

Pixel26,

I couldn't email you so you might want to try me at ryan@gearhost.com.

iControl is getting another push of our code this weekend, thus me being up (we are all here doing the account transfers). DNS modifications will be finished within the next 72 hours. This is the most popular request and it is the most difficult for us. It actually modifies our DNS servers in real time over three distinct networks. The mySQL stuff will be added using a link to a custom myPHP admin for now. That will be working by this week. At this time, even though iControl doesn't contain all of the features that are constantly getting added it shouldn't generate any errors for the current features in place.

Let me know if you have any other questions.
