View Full Version : Are you a proper Typist?

Rewdog

I can type 80 wpm, but I'm a typing teacher's horror ;). I don't use the proper fingers, I keep my wrists down, my head is always tilted, my feet are going every way possible, I never sit up straight. I have food and drinks around the keyboard, I don't clean my keyboard often, hell my keyboard is missing some keys :D .
Are you the same? Or do you do everything right?

Hope this helps.

I'm the same.. But maybe with a semi-faster WPM....

Right now, I'm kicked back in my chair, having a nice cool drink, and being like you, a teachers nightmare.... :D

I think I do about 80 WPM as well. That's with wrists down, feet every which way (feet on desk at side of computer, back twisted almost 90 degrees, not a position to hold for any more than 10 minutes or you won't get up the next morning).

Mostly the right fingers on the right keys, but I do put a few wrong from those heavily engrained habits. I can almost imagine a typing teaching yelling at me "Middle finger on C, not index finger!".

Well I use the correct fingers and stuff like that, however I don't sit up straight or any of that other stuff. I probably would be a lot worse if it weren't for those keyboarding classes last year. The teacher would sit there stare at you until you sat up straight. Then if you head was looking at the keyboard he'd "re-adjust" it so it was looking at the monitor.... speaking of that class, I flunked the final exam, all because I didn't know my full zip code.

I can type freakishly fast when i'm thinking what i'm going to type. None of that typing software rubbish :)

I type with about three fingers of each hand. Pinky fingers do the shift button. Third finger on my right hand does the backspace. Two first fingers on both hands do the typing, and my thumbs press space. Well.. Whichever thumb is closest.

:D

I only use my pinkies for "a" and ";" and "'"

I use Tetraboy's Roving Hands Fast Typing system. In other words hit the key with the closest finger. I can go pretty high on wpm.

I relax when I am typing.

I say I type pretty fast, but not as fast as you all. A little bit slower... I type some of the formal typing ways differently. Do you all type without looking at the keyboard? I suppose so... but oh well!

I type kinda fast, but I make some mistakes here and there and I am not a proper typist, I have my fingers accustomed to the way I learnt to type, never took proper typing stuff seriously :stickout

I have a 75 wpm. And no where near a proper typist.

TimM has just registered yesterday ;)

Back to the topic: I don't care much for real typing skills and all that. I believe that if I can get a message out, then I'm okay. So that means I'm pretty low on the WPM :( But then again, typing with only a total of 5 fingers (3 on the left and 2 on the right) doesn't make it very fast either, does it?

I might go for some classes, if I see the need for that in the future

I can type quite fast, when I'm in the mood.

And, I truly am, a teachers nightmare....

I think I use the same system. Certainly no proper technique. My fingers don't seem to be postioned anywher in particular. I don't hunt and peck and can actually type (somewhat) without looking but it is slow that way and I miss keys. If I look then it is pretty quick. I'm sure the speed wouldn't impress you however :D

I type pretty much the correct way. I never rest my fingers on asdf and hjkl though, but I do use all of my fingers.

I can type about 800WPM. But that was from a Java WPM test I took where I just held down the space bar, so it might not be the best measure of my typing speed.

I find that looking at the keyboard slows me down. Typing is pretty much a subconcious activity for me. I think of what I'm going to say and just type it, looking at what I'm writing on the screen to check for typos. If I look at the keyboard then it makes me conciously think about each letter, and I type about half as fast.

It's surprising to find out how many typing mistakes you make...try removing your backspace key and you will notice just how often your fingers hit the wrong key.

And I certainly don't sit straight. I stole a footrest from one of my chairs to put under my desk so I can stretch out...it's really comfortable, try it!

When I was in high school I typed at a freakish 140 wpm. It's gotten a bit slower now that I'm older and don't follow proper typing procedures.

ROFLMAO!!

If only everyone could type *that* fast!

See to test how good you type properly you need to try typing on one of those " natural" key boards... I type with all fingers not having to look at the keys.. but I dont keep my hands in any certain place on the keyboard. They "rove" around the keyboard as I type. A few years ago I was clocked at 60WPM I need to take a test now... Time to google to find a wpm test so I can see how fast I type.

I found one and only got 79 WPM... I hate most of these java testers.. I type alot faster when Im not trying to read something and its coming out of my brain. Faster than my eyes can work.

hmmm, not I ;) although I did take a Keyboarding class couple years back - my teacher was an old lady with magnifying glasses - she said she could type 140wpm but when she got on the computer to do something, i could see her leaning over and trying to find the right keys... more like 20wpm. Maybe it was just her eyesight... nah, if you can type 140wpm, you should be able to type without looking at the keyboard ;)

anyways, speaking of typing, i got a new cordless keyboard and cordless optical mouse ;) they are pretty cool!

anyways, im one of those people who doesnt use proper typing techniques... my fingers aren't trained to hit their keys that they are supposed to hit - all i need to do is find the 8 home keys and i can type

let me stop blabbering, its 3:48am and i need to wake up at 8! :bawling:

I type something like 35 words a minute. Which till now I thought was a standard... I maybe wrong...

Anyway I look at the screen and type. Only problems I face is when I change the keyboard. Some keyboards are small than the ones I have on my regular box. Once I'm used to the keyboard then everything is fine.

I usually sit in a very relaxed position.I have a nice executive chair which is very comfortable...

Have a great day :)

I can hit around 70 - 80 WPM with "Matt's extraordinarily weird typing system" - I use all 10 fingers but... in no set pattern, lol.

Proper touch-typer over here, and I can do about 120 wpm with 99% accuracy, according to Brainbench. :)

i can type with speed of 70WPM and i type properly. i keep my hands on keyboard wrist and have soft cloths bellow that to reduce the harm. yaeh, my chair is very cool and i sit in proper position (i think), i am typing these things since many years and i know i can not do it for long time without harming my fingers etc. if i will not do it properly.

better learn something from me. :o

You are a machine.

You're like the guy I know that types at 180wpm.
That's so freakishly fast I can't even picture it.

oh yes, I remember those home row key games.
Type a line like
"add ad fad lad lag"
I used to get 160 wpm, 100% accuracy, and of course I killed all the asteriods before they hit the boat :)

Yes.

Classically trained when the training was done on typewriters, not computer keyboards.

The skills transfered well, and I can even type all the numbers and symbols without looking :).

The place I find this is a major advantage is when I'm typing originally created by someone else - reading from material and entering it into a system. I don't find it as big an advantage when I'm creating at the keyboard.

Ah, yes! Learned to type on an IBM Selectric (not sure of the spelling). That typewriter had a "ball".

This thread also make me think of my college days. The school had a large cartography deparment and I worked on the map library. The librarian was very nice, but very old-fashoned. The women who worked there typed, and I did the lifting/filing. She knew that I was a computer major and could type much faster than anyone else there, but I still did the lifting and filing.

I have no idea how fast I type, but I do touch type and I can do all the numbers also. It really pisses off people in the office when I type and talk to them at the same time.

Oh yeah..talking about sitting up-right..lol

Sometimes I'll sit in my chair like..backwards tip it over a bit and have it lean on my desk with my chin on the backrest thing......yeah...weird :D

You guys amaze me. I can only type 77cwpm, last tested by a temporary agency back in 96. I always thought I was a fast typist.

I took two semesters of typing in high school. Yes, typing. Before it was renamed to keyboarding, because we actually used type writers.

I clock in at "approximately" 78.46 WPM I guess. I got to learn on computers when I was in high school. You know, Apple two-eeees? :D With the green monochrome monitors, no hard disk, and dual floppies? Not sure if Intel made a chip yet.

[Here's a WPM thing. 1MB download, so who knows what else it does.]
