Just a general question for host offering reseller accounts,

How do you feel about putting a limit on the number of accounts / domain your reseller can add?

To show that you do care about the infrastructure,
instead of the "UNLIMITED DOMAINS" most offer.

Thanks

We have recently implemented this. Prior to the recent change we had been stating multiple domains but not putting a real limit. I think putting a hard number of domains per reseller account is more honest with our customers. We scale these limits based on the size of the reseller account.

We've been doing the same thing for quite awhile. :)

I would highly recommend it. Reseller servers are very difficult to maintain and if you offer "Unlimited" growth domain wise, it's only going to be harder.

And I think as Aussie Bob has said on here a few times, each seperate domain has potential problems. It's all very well limiting resources, but hosting 100 domains that take 1Gb of space is almost always going to be harder than hosting 10 domains taking the same space.

Every domain has it's own set of httpd.conf entries, dns records, log files, backup files etc etc. Every domain generally has a different administrator with different skill sets and different code. Every account has the chance, if poorly run, to bring down the server.

Restricting the number of domains per reseller account can make life a whole lot easier for everybody IMHO :)

But it is a draw back for buisness.

If you are looking for a reseller acount and you see one that is limited you will problably go for another hoster.

Would it even if the other host had a better record for uptime?

Thats a tricky one, from a purely marketing point of view I'd say don't have the limits. Imagine somebody is looking at 2 hosts, same priced plans, same reputations for uptime, but one with limited domains/email/MySQL DB's etc, and the other with unlimited everything except disk space and transfer. Most customers wouldn't care about the technical side of things, they would go for the unlim host.

Mind you Rob, I've been with you for over a year now and never knew you had any limits! ;) I'll have to go delete all those 1 meg accounts I have hehe.

Good FeedBack

I personally feel limits are good and can also be used as a very positive marketing idea, where you are protecting your customers.

Having the limits displayed with "Why the xxx Limit on domains"? FAQ.
