If this is the wrong place to post this please point me in the right direction.

My son and I are needing help in getting our sites up and running.

J is active in the MechWarrior community and has started a RPG version of the game and it has turned out to be a bigger hit than he had anticipated.
We have tried to set him up with a forum using M$Frontpage and it's not working out very well. He also wants a community environment and a place to post his artwork.

I, on the other hand, am only wanting a personal / family site, and from what I can tell cpgNuke will work for both.

In the other forum where I have asked this question I'm getting advise to stay away from anything with nuke in the name, but I'm not hearing a why.

What advise do you folks have?

For a message board use phpbb or invision board or vbulletin.

With all there forums, you can have an active community and set up hacks with gallerys, etc.

See my link for a use of vbulletin.

It depends on what type of langauage. There are quite a number of good message boards out there. The PHP ones are already listed

For ASP there is WebWiz and Snitz.

chroniker, welcome to WHT. :)

vBulletin is considered by most to be the king of forum software. It also happens to be what WHT is running. There are lots of skins, hacks and support for it. It's not free, and you must lease/purchase a license.

phpBB is a very nice (and free) alternative. It's fairly powerful, has lots of skins and customizations available, and also a good community of support. Chances are it would give you everything you need.

If you will share more info about your plans (and needs), or any other questions you have, then I'm sure plenty of people will jump in to help. Again, welcome to WHT and we hope to see you around.

The other alternative is this nuke:
www.cpgnuke.com
The why is security and while there is no unhackable CMS, cpg is without the problems other flavors of nuke have.
I've seen many good community gaming sites done with CMS software, as well as those done with forum software, it depends what you want the site to feel like.

nuke=cms
vbulletin=forum

phpbb is definately one of the best :) I'm going to use it myself as soon as I get a chance to install it..

Even though I am a big fan of phpBB, actively use it and so on and so forth, I would like to point out that there is a very nice forum software called Invision Power Board. Besides being a little more advanced it also uses better , more efficient code, has more features available to admin in out-of-the-box version. It also has more advanced moderation and group managing features, a lot of available skins and graphics. I know a lot of very busy forums that run on Invision Power Board and they seem to be running very smoothly.

In addition to all this - AFAIK there are portal mods for each of the forums (phpBB and Invision), which may help you if you are building a community around people's forum, not around articles.

Hope this helps.
