I am soon to be purchasing a server for my growing web hosting business.

I downloaded RedHat linux 9 to test on my pc which I set up on a partition.

I installed the desktop environment just so I could get the idea of installing it and messing about etc.

I have finished with it and I want to remove it completely.

I heard that if I were to just delete the partition I would still get the boot manager etc.

I once put longhorn on my pc to mess about with on a seperate partition as well which is still appearing on my boot menu.

Could someone tell me how to remove RedHat and also help me remove the option for Longhorn.

Thanks
Barry

Well... I'm sure sure if this will work, so don't hold me against it, but:

When I had RedHat and Mandrake installed on my system, I simply did a clean installation of Windows XP and it got rid of the partiton for Mandrake/RedHat automatically. You could also use a program such as "Partition Magic" to delete the partitions....

well I used partition magic to make the partition when i done it with longhorn and redhat.

although when i just removed the longhorn partition i still got the option to boot to longhorn. So i think it would do the same again.

I have data i dont want to loose so i dont like the idea of re-install windows and formatting my drive completely. Also I dont want the hassle of backing up all my data onto my laptop and then putting it back on etc.

Although if its the only option I suppose i will do that.

From a windows / dos based boot disk with fdisk on it do the following.

boot up and then type

fdisk /mbr

Make sure you only have the disk that you want to wipe connected at the time you run this just to be on the safe side.

Please note this will wipe ALL boot options from the mbr.

Thanks

Yes you can use fdisk...

However which load manager are you using? if you are using the one that comes with windows XP/longhorn then you can go and edit the file c:\boot.ini (it's hidden) and you can delete the options for the other OSs there.

Thanks. I was told to edit boot.ini so I done a search but i only found the backup. I couldnt be bothered searching for it but you've saved me from having to bother thanks.

one slight problem with that is its not appearing so i done start run then typed c:\boot.ini and its read only so I cannot save the changes. I dont see why its not appearing though as I have selected it to show hidden files and folders. I have also set it to show system files.

Anyone any ideas?

Barry

EDIT

Found the problem Thanks,
