View Full Version : What's the gender ratio on the forums here?
code_renegade 01-04-2002, 11:36 AM I know you guys are sick of all these polls, but I would really like to find out what is the gender ratio like on WHT? I mean, I only seem to see about 5 ladies or so here (including me, although I still get called a tomboy  )
So, what' the ratio like here anyway? Ladies? I mean, is this industry dominated by men or what? :(
I see a a couple of female WebHostingTalkers on this forum. I can tell by their name.
But I'm not a girl.
code_renegade 01-04-2002, 11:52 AM Unless your name was something like Timmy :stickout
Nah, it's just that it seems like such a male-dominated industry, and sometimes, I think I'm too sensitive to make it big :(
Don't worry!!! No one cares!!! Just look at AffordableHosting!!! It is owned by a woman!!! Or at least I think she is a woman... I'm not sure. But she is EXTREMELY SUCCESSFUL!!!!!! Anything Is Possible!
bobcares 01-04-2002, 12:01 PM Don't worry... you'll make it real big... Just be there.. The hosting industry is really cool..
My tech team has 3 girls (that's a small ratio compared to the boys here). But all these girls are very good. The next engineers I take would be girls. As I see they can handle stress better and can write better than guys....( earlier I used to think it is the other way round... )
I even have 2 clients who are ladies and are very successful... So I guess you can be there too...
Have a great day :)
regards
amar
code_renegade 01-04-2002, 12:03 PM Thanks for the encouragement, Timmy :D
Well, I don't know about you, but if you were raised without having to do any housework, never having to go look for a part-time job, and suddenly, your dad cuts off your allowance, you'll probably be shocked and pretty much helpless...
And because I've been taught to play nice all my life, I'm a little too, erm, nice to play hard and fast... Very hard for me to make it here, but I'm going to give it a shot all the same ;)
Tallon 01-04-2002, 03:53 PM I've been called Sir more than a few times :( It used to bother me but I just shrug it off now. I've also run into the type that figure because I'm female, I'm not as capable as a male would be  I try not to let those types of people get to me, but it's hard sometimes.
Stick it out, enjoy what you're doing and the best of luck to you!

well Tallon and avium, the people like me who r not from US or western countries never really know that these are the name of women.
I have many customers who's name sounds so strange to us we use to include dear sir/madam :D
what to do, many times we really can not figure out weather this is name of women or men  and we keep asking each other what do you think about this name. :D
anyway, women's have good sence of humor then men and they are great narrator and care takers.
example is Tina. She is really excellent in managing situations and very good sense of humor in customer relationships. I feel good about her managing all this stuff her self. Extremely difficult to find such qualities in women. :)
Thumbs up for you ladies :agree:
randi 01-04-2002, 06:58 PM Same over here Tallon! For an example- no matter how many times I tried to correct godaddy they kept calling me Mr. Harlan. I tried things like 'my husband, Zack' or 'i'm a chick'- still they didn't listen. On the message boards it happens all the time. Just post something in your profile saying I'm a female and some people will atleast know and help you out when someone calls you dude or something.
I even thought posting an avatar of myself would help the situation. But instead I got asked "BTW - who's the hottie in your icon? nice!" (Hehe!) Case in point here (http://pixelmayhem.com/forum/showthread.php?s=&threadid=127). I didn't really have any problem with that though to be honest.. ;)
To mahinder- I would just not include the sir or madam part, just call the customer by their first name. That would be the safest way to go and would save time trying to figure out if the person is a man or a woman. I think are probably way more than 5 ladies around here somewhere- just have to find them. But I'm a lady and I'll stop jibber jabbering now.. Off to tea and crumpets--

Poll on whether people were male or female.
42 to 4 in favor of males.
Tallon 01-04-2002, 07:34 PM Tallon isn't my real name, I chose it about a year ago to use on other forums and thought I'd use it here as well. I can understand being mistaken for a male because of it.
I get the Dear Mr. Peters as well :D If it's garbage email I tell them that if there really was a Mr. Peters I'd forward it to him. I once talked to a guy online who after discovering I was female would NOT deal with me at all, he requested to speak to a man instead, boy did he get a tongue lashing LOL. These jerks are few and far between.
Now I'm rambling on so I'll quit while I'm ahead :)
Pilgrim 01-04-2002, 07:51 PM Hmm, well it goes both ways.
On two ocasions did I mistakenly think that my customers were female. Their first names are Lynn and Amit.
I'm not a native English speaker and I dunno....the names just sounded female to me :(
Lynn just told me flat out in an email to stop calling him her and I discovered about Amit when I needed to call her (him) and discovered that "she" had a very low voice :P
bitserve 01-05-2002, 12:02 AM Alright, we're getting off topic, but I have a story for you.
Last place I worked, someone who I assumed was a gentleman called and said, "I was talking to mohammed about a problem that I'm having with sendmail, blah blah blah, can I talk to him?"
I said, "He's on another line right now. One of the other techs had this problem with another customer, earlier today." A customer by the name of janet (I'll leave the last name off) was having this problem earlier.
Customer says, "That was probably me".
I asked "What's the name", I asked.
"Janet", the customer replied.
"Oh, you are the same customer. You're calling for janet?".
"No, this is janet".
"This is janet?" I asked in disbelief.
"Yes."
"Can you please hold". I thought that I was being put on, so I had to ask the other guys, "Does janet CENSORED sound like a guy?"
They all look at me and laugh. "Yeah. Haven't you ever talked to her before?"
I admitted that I hadn't. But she was one of our high maintenance customers. Called every day practically. So they laughed that I was getting my turn.
"Thanks for holding, how can I help you"?
I'm not a gender bigot, and am normally pretty vague with customers because you never know, but this one through me for a loop.
Oh well, you probably had to have been there.
code_renegade 01-05-2002, 12:47 AM Gee, we're getting a bit off here - I was trying to find out the gender ratio on the forums :D
As for the username avium, I've had it for about 4 years - I was writing stories back in 1998 (yes, I still write now, but not as much) and named a MALE character avium, which was a part of a latin name for a certain PLANT (greenery, flora, whatever...) Then I figured that it sounded pretty nice, so I used it as my own nick on the internet.
Yep, on a certain mailing list I'm called Neko Chan, or 'cat girl'. Make it easier for others to recognise the gender there... But then again, there must be easily 10,000+++ Neko Chans on the internet... :(
Now, where were we...? Oh yeah - the gender ratio on the forums! ;)

Great place to hang out with dudes. I mean how many places can a lady visit and be surrounded by so many male folk? ;)
Unfortunately there's not that many women involved with computers compared to men (guess the inanimated nature of computers isn't appealing - like auto mechanics?).
I became involved in computers since I was surrounded by family (men) who worked on them (and later working in the biz). Not a typical woman thing back in the late 70s. Ladies then were more interested in home economics - until the mid 70s it was required to graduate!
Woman have come a long way. They'll make a presence in computers in the next decade when computers become as common as TVs.

Another hint: Chris is a gender neutral name (like Pat [Patrick/Patricia], Sandy [Alexander/Sandra], Tracy, etc.).

bitserve 01-05-2002, 05:25 AM Will someone start a poll already? :)
randi 01-05-2002, 05:49 AM [Deleted] :)
randi 01-05-2002, 05:53 AM Yeah Avium, you should start a poll. :)
code_renegade 01-05-2002, 10:40 AM That's the trouble - I saw that most of the polls don't get a click on the response button, but I'll go start it now. ;)
