It's cheaper than most bandwidth. It is not a tier 1 network from what I have read. Some people say it's slower. It seems to be okay if it's mixed with other networks.

cogent is the company which provide low cost connections. i have heared they have very big expansion plans.

here is quote from there web site.

Cogent Communications is a next-generation optical ISP offering ultra high-speed Internet connectivity as well as long haul and metropolitan data transport services to its carrier, service provider and commercial end-user customer base for radically low, unmetered pricing levels

Ok first of all this isnt a flame at cogent, their a hell of a deal!

But as far as expansion plans, i dont think youll be seeing much of that, they dont have much money left in the bank, they wont be lightiung any new citys or many new buildings and its already a pain in the ass to get them to turn up service in a place where they have existing service.

Tell me about it .. they won't even service a building just 100 feet away from an existing lit building (meaning only 1 building in Tampa and one planed in Orlando)

You can do wireless ethernet to bring cogent to you 100feet away.

I heard they were losing millions a day.

I could be wrong though.

FYI: Cogent is a company that was setup as an exercise in Cisco. Cisco basically built the whole network and maintained it. Don't know if they still do.

They hand you 100Mbps Ethernet but it is over subscribed when it gets to the MAN. I've heard stories both good and bad on the speed.

My guess would be their buring about 20M a month.

I've talked to some upstream providers about cogent, and from all of them I hear the same old story. Here's one:
We have contacted cogent in the past. One thing that they do not mention to you is that the lines they are selling are located in major colo facilities. They do not run the lines unless they have enough clients at that location willing to pay their price.

There're some more, of course, but it seems to be some rather strong flames against cogent, so I'm not going to post it here (I've deleted them anyway).

Gives you an idea how they're pretty much, struggling, huh?

Think they will go out of business, or raise their prices soon? I can't imagine how they EVER plan to make money at those prices.

Once Cisco stops throwing money at them (soon), they are done. DS (CEO) isn't worth that much to keep this pig running.

If Cisco only knew how they got suckered into financing these guys, they'd cry...but I can't mention anything about it in public, so I won't! :D

My guess anyhow, won't be more then 12 months, and they will be kaput.
