I posted this in the Ikonboard support forums but they never answered  So I was wondering if any of your users can answer this:

I want to use Ikonboard really badly but I heard that the CGI version uses alot of server resources. Is this also true with the new mySQL edition? Does it run as fast as say phpBB2 runs? Please help me out. I want to use Ikonboard but the resources is a major issue.

Also does the mySQL edition have a compression option?

They now have mySQL support now. But I want to know if that really helps. ;)

Hi!
ikonboard is written in perl which is slower than php and takes more resources. Also the perl mysql:db takes a lot of resources when run.... So my suggestion would be to use a php/mysql board.
Try burning board. It is really cool...

have a great day:)

Matt from iB is working on a re-write of the script in PHP. I don't think it's even in testing yet since ib GOLD was just released.

Ikonboard GOLD is much faster that what you would think. With the mysql database is way faster. Doesn't take that much resources like your making it sound. Install ikonboard with a mysql database and you should have a perfect forum that should be real fast.

So when is this "php version" coming out in BETA or final?

A lot of questins left there unanswered. This is something I don't like at ikonboard's forum.

Never heard that a php version in on the road, but if it's true, that's a good news. By the way, iB3.01 should be resource friendly when you have mysql support. I think a lot of host will support it.

Well this is one reason why they made a member center which is a ticket system with a download center for any build of iB you want along with patches. The forum got way to big and they had to figure out a alternative and I suppose that was it the member center.

PHP version is planned said so by Matt from iB. Also you are correct iB GOLD (3.0.1) is very resouce friendly they worked out a lot of the bugs out and have cleaned up the code as well. If you do run a mySQL database it will run much much faster since the cpu doesn't have to think as much. But for a person to install iKonBoard with mysql support the host needs to have the modules installed for it so perl and mysql can interact and most hosts do not have this .... so this is a message to all the hosts that don't have the modules installed ... download them here --> http://www.mysql.com/downloads/api-dbi.html and install them and let your clients know "Hey we support Ikonboard with mysql now" There are a lot of people wanting to use iKonBoard with mysql cause they have heard that it is faster(which it is) and they will only sign up with hosts that support it, if you don't then your out of a client. So support it and you might get yourself some new clients. :D

I am using the Ikonboard MySql version and find it to be excellent. In fact, find it to be the closest to VBulletin of all I've tested except for one big difference-price. If you only need one board and are going to promote it heavily, you can't beat VBulletin. However, if you need many and/or price becomes a consideration, I very much like Ikonboard-but stick to the MySQL version.
