View Full Version : HostGator/Comcast? Issues
davidbenj 08-13-2004, 12:16 AM I sure hope someone here can help me. My web design firm resently signed on with HostGator as a reseller. We thought it would be a nice add-on (financially for us) when doing sites for clients to be able to also host their site as well. So, the first client we get to use this service (after our own "hosting" site, which is still being developed) we have a problem with. We register the domain for the client (foxfisher.net) and change the nameservers to their package that we set up for them. Last night, I put a very plain coming soon page with their name and phone numbers. Today, while at the client's, I was able to pull up this plain coming soon page, but could not get the email to work. When I returned to my office, I try foxfisher.net and still get the page from godaddy. I try to setup a test email account and that still didn't work. I went to HostGator support, and Lea, tells me she has no problems getting to the site and logging in to cpanel. She tells me it is a problem with my isp (Comcast.) Could this be true? I've tried on both a mac and pc, but still end up at the parked page at godaddy. I IM a friend, who uses RCN, and she has no trouble either. What can I do to fix this?
I really appreciate any help you can give me.

NMKraves 08-13-2004, 01:03 AM I am currently on comcast at 1:01AM EST and the foxfisher.net appears to be working. Perhaps the email does not work yet because the dns is not fully resolved? (I have no idea) It would probably be a problem if the email is test@foxfisher.net
Now I am no expert on dns but wouldn't it take longer for different networks and areas to recognize where foxfisher.net points to?
*Edit*
Nice design site btw :)
Shaun Olsen 08-13-2004, 01:29 AM The website works fine for me from New Zealand.
davidbenj 08-13-2004, 01:45 AM Finally! I can now access the site and get to the cpanel. Still not getting the mail, but maybe by the morning it'll be okay. I wonder why others were able to get to the site, but all I saw was the parked page at godaddy? Any ideas? Please let me know.
NMKraves - Thanks for checking and thanks for the kind words about our site.
Plead - Thanks for checking.

I forget where I read this but different ISPs take longer to recognize the new domain. Seeing as we are both with comcast could it be possible that different geological locations could affect it?
Yes DNS propagate according to location.
I live in RD and i always could see my SITES after 4-5 Days.
and my friend could se my site after 2-3 Days.
SO actualy i always told my Client that DNS will take 1 Week to Propagate to be safe.
davidbenj 08-13-2004, 09:43 AM Okay, so I try to go to foxfisher.net this morning and again get sent to the parked godaddy page. My partner tries and goes to the plain coming soon page. He is on the same network as I am. I tried on three computers, one mac and two pcs. All went to the godaddy page. I restarted the pc that I do the majority of surfing and it works now on this pc, but not the mac or the other pc. I don't get it. Using outlook express, I still can't login into the test email account either. I'm getting pretty frustrated.
Any ideas?
iGravity 08-13-2004, 09:49 AM Don't worry, sometimes my isp(Comcast) takes awhile for DNS on certain sites. Specifically I have had a ton of problems with comcast regarding DNS and it really pissses me off at times.
NMKraves 08-13-2004, 02:57 PM Well you know how they say you can be right next to your ISP yet your internet connection has to go through miles of line to get to you sometimes?

Did you think of rebooting the other two? It sounds like you're caching DNS lookups for too long.

Yeah, I restarted the mac several times with no luck. It's been a few hours since I last tried, so I'm trying right now... It seems to be working on the mac now too! So, I guess you guys were right about the timing once I changed the nameservers. Now to test the email... The email tests seem to be working as well. Next time I'll try and be more patient... Now I know.
Thanks for all the responses.

Skyview 08-14-2004, 01:09 AM I know this may sound overly simple, but did you try clearing the cache in the browser (Tools/Options/Clear Cache in Firefox for example) for the machine that is not working still?
I think this has already been stated but it takes different ISP's vastly different amounts of time to update their zone files and resolve DNS changes sometimes. I switched one a while back (Network Solutions was the registrar) and it took like 5 days AND a resubmit to get it done. On the other hand, I do some with GoDaddy and they are usually done (at least for the people that I know of trying to access the new location) within 12-24 hours. Don't know how I got off on the registrar thing since I was talking about ISP's, but you get the idea. Road Runner (Time Warner) was terrible with this last change. Everyone in the company located in various parts of the US were able to resolve to the new site within 2 days and it took 5 for me! Good ol' TWC
I hope your site is resolving ok for you now.

iGravity 08-14-2004, 05:47 PM On the other pc try going into the command prompt and typing:
ipconfig /flushdns
After you do that restart your pc and try again. Hope it works :)

Ryan
