I just decided to buy a domain through my web host EcommerceDiscovery and 20gigs transfer
Is it common practice for your host to keep your domain?
I have emailed now 4 times requesting i be given the url where i can go and transfer my domain or change its details
I dont know what i can do about this as I might not want to be continusously hosted on his server.
I have never ran into such a brickwall before.
In future it would be best for me to register my own domains like i previously have

Check their TOS and see who owns domains that they register for you. If they own it, you are S.O.L..
I would never register a domain through a web hosting company. They often have their own policies for things like transfers and may even own "your" domain.
If you are a recent customer of this hosting company, and they are not listening to your plea to get your domain transfered to you, I would seriously consider a charge back - unless of course you agreed to let them own it by accepting their TOS when you signed up...
If you'll PM me with the domain name, I'll poke around and let you know what I think your options might be.

For newbie webmasters, it's easy for them to have the web hosting provider register their domain name for them, because a lot of newbies don't even understand that they're two seperate services.
It saves a lot of hassle for them, because they only have to visit one web site.
It's definitely not right that some hosting providers hold domain names hostage, and don't register them in the name of the client. Even if the cost of the domain name is thrown in for free by the web hosting provider, it's definitely not much of a "feature" if you don't even own it when it's all said and done, or end up having to pay for it, anyway.

server has been down 3 times
each time for a long period
why would i want to stay any longer with this nightmare host then the 20gigs i have paid for?
all i ever see is
Alert! Your server did not respond within our timeout period. The server may currently be down! Would you like us to begin monitoring anyway?

Currently we do not provide control panel for our clients to access. Just contact us, we will update WHOIS database, dns records manually. If you decide to change registrar, we will have it transfer to you. We never hold domains for hostage.
We do have a problem with one of our server. It hang up everytime we reboot the system. We are scheduled to replace HDD and rebuild the system sometime on Jan 5th, 2-3 am EST.

Not trying to argue with you here. However, we never ignore emails even if we do not have solution right away. We did have problems with that particular server. I totally understand you are angry with the downtime. I would suggest you to email our billing department to get your payment fix up. Otherwise you may get billed for the coming month.
Finally, I would be appreciated if you could at least pm me your domain or tell me who you are. I am still clueless who you are here.

Personally I do not see anything wrong with getting your domain name through your hosting provider (they do the setup), as long as you own the domain.

Even if you are not satisfied with your service, that doesn't mean you will come here and post rude remarks.
It will not be tolerated.
