Raptors 08-12-2004, 04:54 PM I also want to know which providers will provide 100% uptime guarantee :)
100% uptime is not possible.
You can have 100% network uptime, but not server uptime. This is because every server has to go down at some point - patches need applying, upgrades have to be done. In many cases major windows updates require a server be rebooted.
99.9x% uptime, which factors in approximately 45 minutes of maintance (maximum) per month, is more approachable, and matchable.

Rackspace offer network uptime guarantee (easier to offer, providing there's a solid backbone).
Network uptime means little or nothing, if the servers are down.
Again, you can not physically have a 100% server uptime guarantee on a properly managed, and fully patched/secure windows server.

mapara 08-12-2004, 05:07 PM Simon,
that i total agreed with you. windows machine needs patches and reboots.
Is there any webhost who cut down this downtime by backup server or something.
Huzaifah
we use webecs.com, we have been using them for about 7 months now and havent had any problems with them.
mapara is you planing to run an online aplication where deciction and activity depend on the site, i will suggest intranet.
i having some decition similar too.
either way wont be 100% uptime.
but if the company run the server they choose when and how you will update or patch. (but s**t happend anyways).
Morphy's law, everthing that has the probbaility to fail will fail in odd moments.

KNL-BSW 08-14-2004, 07:58 PM Interland recently had something like an 8 hour power outage. I don't know the cause or if it is fixed. But just thought I should give an FYI.
We had a server there and left because of price and the fact that for the CP which had to be supported through them, major problems were slow to get resolved.
mapara 08-15-2004, 04:18 AM Is there any website where we can see the downtime report of
different webhosts ?
Also. .. Thanks for the first hand knowledge..

KNL-BSW 08-15-2004, 04:23 AM Netcraft.com is about your best bet, but it isn't perfect.
If you have some time you could either find a free tracking service or use something like "alertra.com" 30 day trial to track a variety of hosts.
overulehost 08-15-2004, 06:03 AM yup, i agreed too,
100 % uptime is not possible or should not be.....
server must restart at least once a month so everything goes well
mapara 08-15-2004, 06:15 AM im NOT demanding one server should up 24x7x365.
My Question is:
Is there a web host who have clustered server environment so when the first server goes to reboot, the second server (Backup machine) goes up. and surfers automatically route the backup machine just for a while , so there will be no Downtime .
Correct me if im wrong

It's not as simple as that.
We actually explored this option for our Windows servers but it just isn't practical in our setup
This is definately possible in a setup meant for corporate clients where you have a central database server and two load-balanced web servers. The reason this isn't suited for general consumers is that a) the cost and b) on windows it is very difficult (and almost impossible) to keep the web servers a mirror of each other.
