View Full Version : And you think Paypal is bad?

Let's compare:

Paypal: over 400 transactions in 3 months, roughly $3000 deposited to my bank, and 0 problems, 0. None.

Billpoint: 2 transactions, 1 chargeback, nothing but problems.

They take a bad credit card, I lose the money + $10 and I'm the bad guy being threatened if I don't cough it up.

Here is the BEAUTIFUL email I got from them this morning about the chargeback I have to eat notice the threats:

Dear Gary,

Thank you for your email.

This notice is to inform you that we will be attempting to debit your account. If our attempt to debit you account fails, we may refer the matter to a collection agency. We may suspend your Billpoint account, and advise eBay, recommending they terminate your eBay account.

In order to avoid the above actions, we encourage you to make sure you have the funds available in your account to cover the chargebacks against your account.

Sincerely,

The Billpoint Chargebacks Team.

Yes, paypal overall is not bad. Only problem I have with them is that they make people register as a member while making a payment. If our users can pay quickly by just entering the credit card info, address, exp. date and complete the transaction then it will be good. Right now, a lot of people don't like the registration process. Actually, since we made paypal secondary(because of this) we only get about 5% (or less) of payments with paypal, all the rest come from revecom.

Glad you've had good experiences with paypal Dixiesys! Paypal is good for some.. bad for others. I used to have a paypal account until I heard tons of horror stories of paypal freezing peoples accounts among other things. Some references:

http://www.paypalsucks.com
http://www.paypalsucksass.com
http://www.paypalwarning.com

I'm not sure what to think of them- either way. But after reading the above stories I changed my mind about offering payments with paypal to potential customers. I'm now a pure revecomer. ;)

Please bear in mind that this is the internet, and people can make claims (even false ones) on a regular basis. All customer situations can be resolved with the cooperation of the customer. PayPal would not be able to continue our growth if things were as bad as some state.

Selective information is deadly.

And let's keep it in perspective here.

Paypal: 22 MILLION customers, and what is on those sites? About 50 horror stories? Absolutely no real problems for me or anyone I know. Some annoyances (Like the $5 for referring someone is nearly impossible to get anymore:bawling: but I'll live).

Billpoint: ?? customers 1 horror story right here. I don't need a web site with a bunch of horror stories on it to convince me billpoint sucks.

I like those peed off smilies..   Grrr... hehe..

I'm sorry Dixiesys (#1 for getting off the billpoint topic) but I try to listen from everyones perspective before I form an opinion and thought you might like the same. Don't want to get ya all hot and bothered. ;) It's like the search function on webhostingtalk- If someone wants to find out if a hosting companies good or not- they find opinions and then make their conclusion... right? I wasn't trying to convince you they suck- I don't have an opinion yet either way. There were actually nice comments posted on the message boards on those sites about paypal.com. Alot of people haven't had any problems- some people have. I thought I was just putting some peoples opinions out there. I wasn't trying to be a weiner shnitzel.

Paypaldamon- Thanks for always being so very helpful on the boards here. Also- I know people can make false accusations, but why would a person go through the trouble of buying a domain name and webhosting for an indefinite period of time if they didn't truly believe in what they were saying? Aaaack.. I don't know. I guess I'll have to do some more research..

I think paypal is making a conscious business decision to sacrifice customer support for the quality of its membership base.

I think there realize that the integrity of their membership base is even more important than customer satisfication. I also think in order to be the payment infrastructure of the future, integrity is vital.

This is not to say that they have bad support, I have no bad experience with them. At least this is the way it seems to me.

Have a great day :)

Over the past several months we have used PayPal to move lots of money back and forth without issues.

I do agree that we have been very, very lucky with them, after all the stories I've read.

I use PayPal for my site. I am very satisfied with the withdraw speed, their minimalistic fees and the support: A request to exchange my company name with my confirmed name in my profile (so the money send to my bank wouldn't be sent back to them) was fulfilled immediatelly after ONE e-mail explaining the case. Thanks PayPal.

I am not very happy with people having to register but I do understand that this is the reason for being one of the most trusted partners in the world. I am not very happy with the limited choice of countries they will transfer money to but since I have a bank account in Germany it works for me. Another point is the calculation rate when withdraw in a currency other than US$ (for me: EUR) but this is a pangalactical :D tragedy I think.

they did me too, but i don't bother them, people don't tell 100% true. It is because there account may have been frozen they are now making mess of paypal.

well, i am waiting for the day when paypal will make withdrawals available in india bank accounts. :spiny:

This may be of interest to hosts trying to make using paypal easy on their customers:

Pre-Populate Your Customer's PayPal Sign-Up

Increase your sales by pre-populating your customer's PayPal payment pages.
If you have already collected your customer's information, you can pass this information to PayPal to pre-populate the first page of a new customer's sign-up. The fields and parameters are listed below. You can pass all or none of this data. While your customer's sign-up page will be pre-populated, it will still be editable.
To pass this information to the PayPal payment pages, post the variable name and the associated data to PayPal in the HTML in the form of "variable name = value". You will also need to change your cmd value to '_ext-enter' and add a new variable, 'redirect_cmd', whose value should be '_xclick'. Please see the sample code below for an example.

This is found under the "sell" tab

I don't see any example. Did you forget? I would like to see it.

I hope Ireland will be added to PayPal's list of countries soon. The UK and Northern Ireland are already supported, so I don't see how adding the Republic of Ireland as well would be a lot of work. :)

Pretty please? :D

The part of me that is Irish will report it today:) You can currently make payments through PayPal from Ireland. You could also (from my understanding) make withdrawals if you had a US bank account.

Paypadamon,

Did you ever see my other thread about the "code" that one has to enter while signing-up for a new account and how it could be confusing as you can not tell the difference between the letter "O" and the number zero?

Any thoughts?

As far as I am concerned, paypal (http://www.aboutpaypal.org) is not really that bad.

If you are going to blast someone, how about robert cranium, aka michael moore.

Stop waisting time blowing your horns and go out and make an actual difference.

PayPal, yeah...Whatever.

FYI this thread is almost 3 years old.

As of March 3, 2004 Damon no longer works for Paypal.

I have had similar experiences with Paysystems, they are the worst merchant account providers I have ever dealt with, highly unrecommended.

Edit: opps, sorry didn't see the dates on any of the posts above.

this is no longer true. For a while there has been a feature for going straight the payment process and then an option to save the billing info as a paypal account.

So in my humble opinion, PayPal is a perfect option for online transactions and because they have high amounts of users that buy stuff and sell stuff through them, they can sharge very low rates.

I use them for my OS dev community osdever.net for fund raising and obviosly i use paypal for ebay purchases. Hosting is no exception for Paypal's usefulness.

My understanding is that when making a payment through Paypal, you have the option to create full Paypal account, or to just make the current payment. Try using Paypal with a shopping cart system and the process as very quick and easy.

Paypal has been very good to me. From what I have seen, most of the complaints of Paypal are old. They seem to be pretty solid right now, of course there will always be exceptions.

The reason the complaints are old is because most of the crap stopped once ebay bought them. They have changed a lot.

You know it's hard to say, but some people don't have a life and others feel they were shafted even if they were not so who knows and some of them may have even been shafted, no company is with out it's faults.

Agreed...in the last 5 years, I have made around $430,000 USD through PayPal. I have nothing but praise for them. :)
