View Full Version : advance payment / cancellation dilemma

Okay. Tell me if I'm being unreasonable:

I paid for 6 months in advance with Tera-byte, and after weeks of trying to figure out why the server response was horrific (see this thread (http://www.webhostingtalk.com/showthread.php?threadid=30602)), and getting rather frustrated, I decided to move elsewhere.

Now, with any other host that I've been with, when I've cancelled they have refunded the remainder of time left on my account. (Not that I move hosts often, but it's happened a couple of times, and both hosts (hostrocket and cedant) refunded the unused portion). With Tera-byte, all I've been told is, "You have 30 days from signup to cancel and get a refund. After that, no refund is given."

I've scoured their site looking for information stating that, "No refunds will be given after 30 days on prepaid accounts" or something to that extent and haven't found anything. The harsh reality is that I should have asked before I moved... (caveat emptor and all that) but I'm still rather annoyed that they're basically making me eat three months of a six month prepay, for problems that were confirmed.

So, am I being unreasonable to expect my money back? And if not, what avenues do I have to try and get a refund?

thanks,
Neil

you are not in a position to get a refund, you get a discount when you pay for a year.. if you were able to just leave at any time and get a refund then there wouldnt be any point of them giving you a discount. I think that made sense.

I don't agree with that. The discount for paying upfront is also for the cash received upfront (interest).

Plus, if there were problems then refunding is the minimum a company can do. I mean, downtimes can cost multiples of the "small" monthly fee for hosting.

The best thing to do is charge the time used at regular monthly rates, then give a refund on what is left. This is only if the customer is unhappy with service like theNonsuch is.

If theNonsuch were moving just because he found a better deal, then I agree, no refund is in order. Does your cell phone company let you out of a commitment if you find service cheaper elsewhere?

Just my 2

<Lets see how long it takes someone to say "Do a chargeback!". That seems to be the Standard Operating Procedure around here.>

Ok, so the host will say "you are moving for a better deal" and the customer will say "I am moving because I am unhappy with your service" :D

The best way is to refund the unused portion (of course without any rebate for the 6 months).

Well, by expecting (or wanting rather), a portion back, you're assuming the term is 30 days, which it isn't when you sign up for 6 months of hosting. The term is 6 months in this case.

To put it another way, if you signed up for a host (just monthly) who had a 10 day money back policy and on the 15th day, you decided to move, you wouldn't necessarily be entitled to getting 15 days worth back. The term isn't daily.

"So, am I being unreasonable to expect my money back? And if not, what avenues do I have to try and get a refund?"

Well, somewhat if you expect it, but I don't think you're being unreasonable to want it, or even to ask for it back. None really, as you used the service for some of the term. I don't think you are unreasonable for wanting your 3 months back, but the provider wouldn't be wrong in not giving it to you (just as a host wouldn't be wrong to keep your 15 days worth).

Edit:
Steve slipped in a post there so you two will probably work something out off borad (how it should be anywhooo). Good luck...

Usually, most people are honest and don't need to lie. :D

We seldom, if ever, do not provide refunds. It is actually just easlier in the end. However you can not expect other host to follow the same set of rules. Each company has its own terms. It is not fair for another host or customer to dictate what those should be. Buying web hosting is NO different then buying a toothbrush: Caveat Emptor - let the buyer beware.

Ultimatally it is the buyers responsibilty to read "No refunds will be given after 30 days on prepaid accounts" - of course, if it were there.
