Hi, as I've seen on other sites, they offer a preview/demo mode of cPanel. How can I do the same without allowing them to see the info on my own domain?

And how did they create a demo/demo username & password? I don't want to have to get another domain name just for demo mode since it looks like you enable demo mode per domain. Any thoughts/ideas? TIA.

you must have WHM installed on your server. And here is the way :

To enable or disable demo mode:

Click on the Disable or Enable Demo Mode link in the Account Functions menu.

Click on the required domain or user name in the displayed list and click on the Modify button.

Click on the Enable button to enable demo mode or click on the Disable button to disable demo mode.

good luck

*Do not* provide a live demo of cpanel (whether the demo mode is enabled or not). Search this forum for an amount of servers comprimised in some way or another (either with spam attack, irc scripts, use as warez dump or something else) with the third party gaining entry via a demo account.

To show what it looks like on your site use a screenshot or static html demo (you'll have to make this youself by saving the page in IE)

I echo what Jim just said... We just had a client hacked on Sunday due to the combination of the CPanel demo and an insecure kernel... It took a while to reinstall the server, transfer over all accounts (and make sure that all databases work), and fixing issues with CPanel and Fedora 2. Demo mode is the devil :D

In addition to what I said... if you are a reseller and you setup a live demo account only to have someone then use it as a warez dump and cause a whole load of data transfer, it will probably be you who is liable for the overage bill from your provider. I've seen this happen more than once so beware.

It's a dedicated server but I think I'll go with the screenshots. Thanks :)

Do not use Cpanel demo mode. PERIOD.

I had to do a custom lock down on my site to display my Cpanel demo.
The default cpanel demo is a joke thats all I can tell you.

Of course, never trust a simple demo mode... :)

/dev/mntDemoSite on /home/demosite type ext2 (ro,noexec,nosuid,loop=/dev/loop0)

along with the domain being in remotedomains, nossh, chrooted ftp...

granted, you can't do it if your in a shared hositng enviroment...

Here's a static x2 demo for those that want it. MUCH safer and serves the same purpose.

Enjoy :)

Will take a look at this a little later... busy racing to the email client looking for server deployment messages ;) Very cool though, thanks for sharing :)

Is there a demand for a tutorial on locking down Cpanel demos?

I might write one if theres enough demand and of course if time permits.
