Will there be alot of downtime? Data lose etc. Thanks AnyDemo 08-09-2004, 09:43 AM Hi, I think a search on "transfer account", "transfer reseller accounts", etc.. on this forum should get a lot of answers. This is very easy to transfer accounts. If you do it right, the transfer should be seamless. LordOfDomains 08-09-2004, 09:52 AM If you do it right there will be 0 downtime ;) MatthewN 08-09-2004, 10:03 AM Hello, One thing to watch out for is dynamic sites that use a database. One example is a forum. When you copy the forum database over to the new host then propogation for the 24/48 hours or so will mean that someone posting may be posting to the new servers database or old servers database. You may loose a handful or many posts depending on how busy that database driven site is. There are ways to prevent this but it requires a host who allows you to edit DNS entries and change the TTL. You can then do a few tricks to keep the DB current. A search should be able to go more in to this but if you have no luck then post back and I can give a detailed explanation. LordOfDomains 08-09-2004, 10:05 AM if you are intending to actually do that? If so do you have WHM? SubReseller 08-09-2004, 02:24 PM in WHM, select "Copy an account from another server with account password" then edit the MX entries to redirect to the new server and you should experience no downtime might be a idea to ask your new host to do this for you if you are unsure Sam-So 08-11-2004, 06:57 AM Well, no its not hard. yes i agree that only need is proper way to transfer all your domains from one server to another. Most of companies do transfer your accounts on request free of charge .. so no worries overulehost 08-13-2004, 12:33 AM I got 2 dedicated servers and have no problem with transferring if you know what you are doing, depend on your server's performance, might be some delay MNETS 08-13-2004, 12:39 AM If you do a search on account transfers I'm sure you can find something. I've come accross some companies that do it. Sorry I can't remember any URLs Protagonist 08-13-2004, 02:56 AM Transfer the active sites (those who have dynamic pages) last. Depending on number of your accounts, it may take hours . Give enough notice to your clients especially those with forums so they can close it down at the time of the move. Then once the move is complete, be ready to change the new nameservers. PhotonVPS-Jim 08-13-2004, 03:00 AM Its very easy to transfer accounts to another server including resellers. Basically if you have databases and php simply take it down for several min with a "maintencene screen" when they go to the site. Go ahead and transfer the data to the new machine / host. After its done simply re-enable it but have the site forward to your new ip. This is because it takes 24-72 hours for DNS to fully propogate. Hope that makes since but im sure there are some companies willing to help you out with this. drwhiz 08-13-2004, 02:48 PM set your TTL to something very low, say 900 and await for the changes to take effect, probably a day depending on that of your current timing or even more. Also, make a backup of all your zone files just in case. Begin the copy over and immediately update your nameserver details. Once everything has pointed over, which should be really fast now since it is only 900, check your contents and email your clients an update. Revert your TTL to the default setting and you are done. No downtime, :) |
