daretosucced 01-02-2002, 09:05 AM I don't have a degree as such...but I'm one of the most sought after person here in INDIA...as I used to run 3 software solution companies by myself.
I know a lot of programming languages and I have what very few people have...real world experience.
Our team led by me...developed more than a dozen internet based software solutions and portals.
Now the questions is....
Will companies like GM or other biiiiiiig companies who pay biiiiiiiiiiig money give job to me...because I've immense knowledge and I have been CEO of 3 big software companies but at present all of my companies r bankrupt due to some other prob.s
DanielP 01-02-2002, 12:36 PM Experience will only get you so far, I don't really forsee any big companies going out on any big spending sprees for employee's at the moment. Salary rates were WAYY inflated during the dot com explosion so their dropping back to earth now and with the economy the way it is not that many people are going to be looking for additions to their staff. Well, not the larger companies anyhow. Also, the most i've seen a software engineer be paid was about 125,000 USD a year, and that was working with microsoft on development projects.
If you go smaller corp the most you'd probabbly get would be around $50,000 - $65,000
but because of the economy many smaller business's are cutting back on big expenses. Plus, you being over seas and not local does make it harder for the smaller companies to pay someone that much $, generally anybody that well paid they prefer to have them in their office so they can see what their paying soto speak.
cperciva 01-02-2002, 05:49 PM I'm one of the most sought after person here in INDIA...
What we have here is a troll. In fact, a domesticated troll, who has long since lost his fear of humans after being fed one too many times; and a vastly overfed troll, judging by the number of replies to his earlier threads.
PLEASE DON'T FEED THE TROLLS.
daretosucced 01-03-2002, 02:32 AM Funny..heh
JustinK 01-03-2002, 02:42 AM We aren't those biiiiiig companies so why don't you call up the biiiiig companies and ask if they'll hire you. No one here can decide that for them.
auyongtc 01-03-2002, 05:13 AM Never heard of your name... however sought after it may be...
Seriously, if you're thinking of just 1 post can get you a high-paying job.. you gotta be kidding...
Like what Justin said, go find a real job the real way... not much help bragging your experience here and hoping it will land you a job with a fat salary. Oh yeah, what experience you learned by bankrupting 3 biiiiiiiiiiiiig software companies???
daretosucced 01-03-2002, 07:19 AM I just wanted to know if I can get a great job even if I don't have a degree. All I have is experience and knowledge, real knowledge.
I just don't have any papers for these things though.
Thanks anyways guys.
daretosucced 01-03-2002, 07:21 AM How much can I expect to get per hour ?

I heard they raised the minum wage to $7.25 (I might be off) per hour in the U.S.
ho247 01-03-2002, 07:57 AM Are other people thinking that these '$1 million' posts are only to get the post count up?
Alan
BrianF 01-03-2002, 08:10 AM Perhaps. Maybe he is seriously trying to find a job. But by putting 3 companies out of business, esp. BIGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGG ones, you're not going to find a good job anytime soon.

You won't be getting a big job and being paid by the hour, I can tell you that much.
daretosucced 01-03-2002, 10:41 AM Those 3 companies of mine....r bankrupt not because of me but because of other people and some other strange situations totally unrelated to me.
I just need to know....can't I get a dignified job with that enormous amount of knowledge and experience I have..but I just don't have a degree in my hand.
I'm leaving for USA this month so I'm just looking for some sincere feedback from you guys.
And...no I'm not boasting abt myself...but I guess I just need to tell you abt my situation.
Thanks

You don't even have papers for your 3 CEO positions? I think you mentioned something like you worked for 3 big software companies. You should have some employment paper of contract paper, right? At least you should have references.
By the way, when you try to get a job at a big company, don't mention you worked for big software companies. In their opinion, if you make less than 100 million per year, you are not big. Just say you worked for 3 software companies. Maybe you can also cut the CEO title, because nowadays, a person can be a CEO for his/her one person webiste, not even a company. The meaning here is totally different from the CEO of the large companies.
daretosucced 01-03-2002, 03:11 PM My question is still unanswered...!!!!!
I just need to know if Big companies in USA hire people who do not have degree ???
I've got immense knowledge and experience....will they still want me to have a degree in engineering ???
Please tell me about that.
Thanks
Rewdog 01-03-2002, 03:24 PM Yes, they will want you to have a degree

There is no definate answer.
But, generally, large American / Candian / European firms WILL require you to be educated to degree level for the higher paid jobs. Of course, there will be exceptions, but as a rule, they look for degrees.
allan 01-03-2002, 04:21 PM It has been my experience that major corporations do not hire people who use r instead of are.
daretosucced 01-03-2002, 04:28 PM You want me to type "are" instead of "r".
Ok friend, cool down....just typed all this in hurry as I'm doing it now.
I guess it is fine to use abbreviation instead of typing the whole word...
saves time, money, bandwidth and so on :)
I just wanted to know...
that as I'm going to USA, will it be possible for me to earn for my bread & butter...a house and a car...and live independently or not ?
Thanks
Hey! How are you doing?
Well what city are you moving to? I was just wondering...
BrianF 01-03-2002, 04:39 PM They're not going to hire an uneducated person who hasn't gone to college (no offense intended).
You need a college degree etc... in order to be hired by mostly any company except in the Fast Food Field.
Simply stating that you've done it before won't cut it.

I am no sure why the CEO of three big companies does not undertand that the answers to these questions depend on a lot of things.
To start with there are definitely programming jobs avaiable, but you haven't said what type of programming you are capable of. JAVA is hot right now, Fortran is not. If you are Fortran programer expect to be forced to eat Safeway brand bread and butter and drive a 1987 Yugo. If you are a JAVA programmer you will do better.
What does your resume look like? Do you have 10 years programming experience, or 6 months? If you have 10 years, your chances of finding a job are better than if you have 6 months.
Where are you moving to? If you move to New York or DC your job opportunities will be better than if you move to Windber, Pennsylvania.
How much savings do you have? If you can live for 6 to 9 months without finding a job you will probably be able to find a job that suits you, if you have 2 weeks of reserve cash, you will probably be waiting tables, and never get a programming job.
How is your spoken English (that's American, to our British friends :))? As illegal as it might be you will probably have a better chance of getting a job if you speak English well (at least better than you type).
No one here can answer those questions for you...if your resume is online somewhere perhaps we can offer you advice about your chances, but there are no guarantees.
Have you considered posting your resume on Monster.com or Hotjobs.com? That will help you determine if there is any interest in your talents.
Everybody is correct.
You must have some sort of degree to get a professional career that pays well.
I think you will be able to get a house and a car. Cars are relatively cheap! You can get a nice apartment, too! And you will be able to enjoy FREEDOM! :)
I suppose you should have fluent English, because you are from India. That is just my not so accurate observation. Hopefully you have enough money to last for A WHILE, because finding a job is not that easy.
Rewdog 01-03-2002, 06:12 PM The job market sucks at the moment. I know of many 50 year olds, who've worked for NCR for 25 years, as well as having a masters degree, but they are having a hard time finding a job that pays over 40k a year. Instead of expecting bread and butter, expect a cracker and be extremely happy if you can get the bread.
I know... especially at this time!!!
XTStrike 01-03-2002, 06:31 PM DARE I post this but it may stop this post from jumping back to the top.
I am currently contracted to General Motors and have been in other large arganisations, large organisations are not looking to hire IT staff much more and are not really looking to hire people in general as it is cheaper to outsource (contract)
They only contract from certain "designated" companies, therefore you would have to be employed by one of the smaller companies first before you get into a big company.
Alot of these outsource compnies are looking for people with a degree of some sort or a specialist subject, maybe mainframe experience, etc...
Ive met the head of Information Systems for General Motors and he is one of the only employees in the company (bar a few, one of which i work with), the rest are contracted including me. Many of the remaining employees are due to retire soon... to be replaced by contractors.
bitserve 01-03-2002, 07:18 PM One place that is definitely almost impossible to get a job at without having a degree is a degree granting university. :)
Unless you want to be a janitor or something.
Lawrence 01-03-2002, 10:11 PM (I'm going off experience in Australia, but it probably relates well to the US).
You should contact the institute of engineers in the US. Most companies won't necessarily require a degree, but they most likely will require acceditation with the institute or equivalent.
With that said, the institute will require a degree or exceptional circumstances otherwise, along with around 5 years experience at least.
I forget what the US institute governing software engineers is called. I think it's part of the IEEE? (Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers)? I'm sure there's plenty of US engineers about who can tell you more about it though, and give you more US-specific info.
auyongtc 01-03-2002, 11:09 PM Seems more like another Dilbert wannabe to me... :)
Didn't you hear about the bad job market now in US? People are being retrenched and hardly making ends meet... and he's trying to go there and expects to get a good job...
You know what, with the money you earned being CEO of 3 firms, you ought to have enough cash to pay off at least till Degree course.... go enrol into one
ADEhost 01-04-2002, 02:30 AM this is just to sweet.
1) ceo of 3 companies that sank.
2) does not understand the tricks of getting employment in the USA
do you need a degree to be hire.
NO.
do you need to know someone to get that high paying job with out a degree yes
so tak ethat big CEO roledex and call your pals in the USA
daretosucced 01-04-2002, 02:46 AM I'm good enough in english.
I'vve great experience in programming languages.
well versed in...vb.net c# Java VC++ PHP Perl VBA vb6 etc etc
didn't spent much time with... Delphi, prolog etc.
Can do well... Oracle, SQL server 2000, linux administration, *inx programmng and so on, little hacking cracking, online promotion ( best at it) etc etc
I have got enough money to stay afloat for just one month.
I've got many friends and relatives over there..I've already seen and posted to many job sites... contract job is fine with me as my best ability is to get a work done despite of *** hurdles faced.
I just don't have a degree and don't have enough time to get 1.
If I can just get a job for 6 months or an year..just to stay afloat...I'll be back in my business within that time....and will be on my own again.
I was just looking for sincere feedback...that always help.
Thanks guys
bitserve 01-04-2002, 03:11 AM McDonald's will always take you until you can get a higher paying job.
If you prefer, Wendy's, or Burger King. :)
I actually don't recommend McDonald's because they tried to sue sarah michelle gellar. I think.
Skeptical 01-04-2002, 06:47 AM If you really want a good job, just be sure to put in your resume:
I want a job at your BIIIIIIIIIIIGGGGGGGGGGG company.
